[rCable] Intermittent connectivity issues ?

All day I've been having weird sporadic issues to seemingly anywhere. At any given time, some IPs will be unreachable, others not. Then a minute later, it'll be fine again, but other destinations become unreachable. It seems like a routing issue somewhere in big bad R's network but I'm not sure.

Prime example:

traceroute to fnarg.com (37.48.71.223), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
1 192.168.0.254 (192.168.0.254) 0.185 ms 0.186 ms 0.182 ms
2 10.106.174.1 (10.106.174.1) 6.866 ms 6.874 ms 6.873 ms
3 209.148.241.109 (209.148.241.109) 17.294 ms 17.302 ms 17.301 ms
4 gi-1-1-3.gw01.grnsbr.phub.net.cable.rogers.com (24.153.7.5) 14.071 ms 14.078 ms 14.075 ms
5 * * *

a minute later:

A minute ago I couldn't ping the datacenter down the street from me (64.26.x.x). SSH connections randomly drop, but are fine if I reconnect just moments later. It does not seem to discriminate, any connection is fair game. Red Router gone crazy / DDoS ?

Same here in Toronto. Random sites are timing out.

Earlier, or still ongoing? If ongoing, can you send a trace? We did route around some hardware we needed to do urgent maintenance on between 1pm and 3pm, but all transit peers back up.

Could this have affected my folks VoIP quality (Ooma) at their office? Got a message that they're suffering from some EDI failures and issues calling out between those hours. Or do I have some more digging to do?

If it was during those hours then probably related. My apologies for the brief issue while we performed some critical maintenance.

Still ongoing, but because it's so quick, I haven't been able to get a trace before the problem "fixed itself".

Just a minute ago, news.cnet.com timed out. Now it's back. SSH connections to my own boxes all over the world have been timing out every 10 minutes or so, but it is very random.

It does seem to be outside Start's network. The few traces I did run were dying right after that gi-1-1-3.gw01.grnsbr.phub.net.cable.rogers.com hop.

We forgive you. Haha. In all seriousness, Start has been absolutely exceptional and little issues like this do not hurt us. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a bigger issue at hand within the office network that I need to track down. Hard when I'm a thousand kilometres away.

How frequent is it occurring? Can you also post modem stats? (in case it's not related to the other issue). Thanks.

Modem stats look fine. It only happens to specific IPs, not even a whole subnet just the one IP. I could have a dozen active connections to different hosts on the same network and only one will die at a time. While web browsing, every few minutes a page will fail to load from a big site, sometimes even Google. There again, wait a minute and refresh, it's back to normal.

Any chance I can convince you to reboot your router and factory reset the modem? If it's still having problems after that PM me your account # and I'll work directly with you to run some tests. Thanks.

Forget the modem. I've been having the same issues this afternoon in Simcoe County.

I had the same issues during the day - thought they were on my end. Good to know they weren't.

I'm getting hiccups again. Connection timeouts to be specific. Was ok from 5 till about now.

Various sites, various locations around the world

For example You Tube will load a video but then stop buffering at random points, or the next video I select will time out. Google, FB. BBC and various European news sites are the same.

Trace for YouTube looks the same the 10 or so times I ran it, during time out issues and during normal loading.

Tracing route to youtube.com [173.194.43.70]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms DD-WRT [192.168.1.1]
2 7 ms 7 ms 8 ms 10.105.24.1
3 25 ms 12 ms 11 ms 209.148.244.69
4 9 ms 10 ms 16 ms 69.63.252.250
5 10 ms 9 ms 9 ms 72.14.198.214
6 10 ms 8 ms 19 ms 216.239.47.114
7 9 ms 10 ms 9 ms 72.14.239.19
8 9 ms 10 ms 8 ms yyz08s09-in-f6.1e100.net [173.194.43.70]

Trace complete.

Now I know I am not alone. I have been having these intermittent problems throughout the days and evenings for the last few weeks. It's been very annoying. If quite a number of (Ottawa-area) customers are having the same sort of issues, shouldn't Start have a chat with the BIG RED to see what can be done?

The problem reported in this thread that started yesterday around 1pm was an issue encountered when we routed around a piece of equipment that needed maintenance. That issue was resolved yesterday afternoon so if you're still having issues please call us to trouble-shoot as it sounds like you may either have node congestion, a line issue or something else that trouble-shooting will help diagnose. Thanks.
