I'mma hold my breath. There's been a lot of e-Wallet measures that have come and gone. They all provided zero functionality to the consumer (other than hey, I can use my phone!), and had zero incentive for the merchant. Hell, some of the few places that did get kiosks compatible w/ these technologies turned them off due to security/training fears.

Basically, I think this will be much like the smartwatch market. Lots of hype as the "next thing in tech" but w/ trace observed adoption. (I'd love to see it work so I can lighten the wallet load, but said reasons just gum the hell outta adoption)

The reason why I believe Apple Pay would be successful is not for the fact that Apple released their version of the digital wallet but because it's now in a sense a requirement for merchants to accept chip-n-pin cards at their stores.

»www.economist.com/blogs/ ··· lains-18

Since merchants are already going to need an upgrade of their terminals you could expect that the new readers will also at the very least have NFC. At the time Google Wallet was released and I owned my Galaxy Nexus, I used Google Wallet to make purchases at stores. However most NFC readers are either not working, or had very limited adoption. I preferred it though since it was a buffer between me and the merchant without ever exchanging my card with crooks.

Apple would of failed just as Google Wallet if it not wasn't for the executive order. Since now the banks have an incentive to migrate to chip and pin for liability reasons, the merchants also have the incentive since it would reduce the amount of fraud at their stores and have the ability for users to pay in more ways than one.

Mine wasn't on the list, but just received this today. Glad they're working on it.

We are excited to announce that soon you will be able to use your USC Credit Union credit and debit cards with Apple Pay, the new way to pay using an iPhone 6.

...

Although we don't have a specific date, we are "in the queue" with Apple and hopeful it will be within the next couple of months- if not sooner! ...
Now just waiting on PayPal (like that will ever happen) and, ironically, the Barclays Apple-branded Visa card.

Isn't the US going Chip and Signature, not Chip and PIN? And yes, Google Wall has been around with NFC for awhile, but most readers at Gas station pumps and such are't enabled. All all these going to be magically turned on now? I'm fine with it as Google wallet works the same as Apple pay.

Chip and signature has been around already however they are now finally releasing chip and pin which makes it harder to forge than just a signature.

The reason I believe these readers will magically turn on now is because most merchants will need to upgrade their POS systems and most likely these new readers will have NFC as part of the package.

The other part is that I have read an article from Bankrate which was a shift of liability for fraud charges. I am still trying to find the article I have read that might also mean a shift in transaction costs. Chip and PIN being cheaper because it's a more secure method however I can't find the source.

Isn't the important part of using the service the vendors?

I get it's important to have various banks support Apple Pay.

Seems to me it doesn't matter which bank supports if the terminals/retail establishments don't (CVS, Rite-Aid).

Yup. Fraud liabilities are the reason why the already existing NFC readers were disabled. Or at least every merchant I could ask about the matter.

I'm wondering if TD bank will jump on board with Apple Pay, I'm with Berkshire Bank right now but will gladly go with TD Bank if they go Apple Pay. The problem is that TD Bank doesn't have free checking.

I'm sure CurrentC will be a Failure as the consumers won't like it. I've seen on Twitter calls for boycotts of retailers not backing Apple Pay.

When you say TD Bank doesn't offer free checking, can you elaborate? I opened a TD Bank account (to switch away from BB&T and to have access to a local bank, as I do all my banking @ USAA).

They aren't charging me any fees, so long I keep the minimum (which is very low - $150).

...why? Of all the things to call a boycott for, it's over a service that provides comparatively little to nothing to the user.

Then again, there are people calling for boycotts on places barring Google Glass, so I guess dumb's been around a while.

Can you elaborate? You seem to know a bit of information regarding the liability concerns for a business who accepts NFC. My understanding that currently supporting NFC would of reduced liability concerns versus current swipe and sign. Is this not the case?

Honestly, I only know the hand-me-down word of mouth. Around here, big chains like McDonalds have had NFC readers available...but disabled since I can remember. I'd try and casually ask why w/ the managers where I went (and in different chains), and they simply stated it was for security/liability reasons. Why/how exactly, I never could get much elaboration.

I'd think so too...but I can't tell if people got over sensationalized on the "NFC sniffers" hype or whatnot that rolled out. I know as a card customer, there's no difference in liability - I'm still not liable for fraudulent purchases. Whether there's more liability pressure put on retailers for accepting NFC payments...that could be something.

I hear people say this often and I don't understand it.
TD Bank $15/mo. fee is waived if you maintain a daily $100 minimum balance I think. Can you explain why this is a problem?
If you can't maintain some cushion in your checking account what wiil be the benefit of ApplePay other than maintaining debt, getting into more debt, and bouncing a check more securely?

At my credit union I never pay the $5.25/mo. because I maintain at least twice the $750 minimum in checking and earn dividends. I use money as a tool.

My account frequently goes below $100 but I rarely write checks (just to the landlord and to the alarm company) but I've never bounced a check. I always check my bank account before whipping out the debit card. Some of us are not that fortunate to have high incomes. But I live with my family and have no children to support so I have a little more money to blow on what I want.

The landlord has been sitting on the rent check, I wish she'd cash it.

I've had a chip in my MC for about three years and Visa a month ago.
I guess my Amex Blue will have one soon I guess.
Since its the banks money, zero liability, not a debit card, use them only if I can pay it off within 24hrs and 95% of everything being purchased on Amazon it's not much of a big deal and will eventually have the service.

Has nothing to do with high income. Its the spending. I know people making more than $100k/yr. and can't maintain a minimum balance just like you.

If you've never lived in your car on a Safeway parking lot,go to aeronautics school full time, never getting free grants, paying your own tuition, and working 2-3 jobs barely getting by you're doing better than I was.
For a time I had a landlord as well. My family was 1200 miles away.
Even then I maintained cushion and some sort of an emergency fund. I have set goals and did not blow my money.
