XBOX ONE vs 360my pretty precocious 8 yo grandson want an Xbox, for Christmas, to play Minecraft, which he is playing on a computer. He thinks he want a 360 but a One seems to make more sense to me in the long run.
Any opinions welcomed. |

What you're looking at is a huge library of games available now for the 360 vs. a small but sure-to-be-huge library of games in the future for the One.
A One is more future-proof, obviously. |

Honestly, if the kid is really interested in Minecraft specifically then he is already playing the best version of the game. And I mean that in the best way possible. The issue with the console versions of the game is they aren't "current" so to speak. They are several updates behind (due in part to how the games had to be built for the port and they way both companies deal with patching and certification for their games). From what I was able to find they're at roughly PC version 1.3.1 (where as PC is at 1.8) and each version step is usually a pretty big update.
In addition you get access to the mods, the better server options, and the comfort (relative to use the user) of a mouse and keyboard over a controller (which I don't feel works particularly well with Minecraft).
Anyway, if you're going to go that route regardless going with the Xbox One over the Xbox 360 will be the better option in the long run. The 360 has nearly a decade of time to build up a library but over time the One will do the same, and of course be current while doing so.
And now is a good time to get one, if someone is so inclined. The removal of the Kinect, the Price Drop (plus a free game I believe), etc. Right now the library of available games isn't super impressive (the first year of a console launch rarely is) but it only improves over time.
I would like to reiterate however in terms of Minecraft, the PC version is the best version. |

I will generally agree that the PC version is superior...unless your grandson may want to play Minecraft with his friends using splitscreen on the same console, which I understand is not possible with the PC version.
I would also agree that for future-proofing purposes the Xbox One is the way to go. Don't buy into hardware now that's on its way to the end of its life cycle (360). And Minecraft is available for the One as of last month I believe. |

Huh, that didn't even occur to me. This is very much true. As for buying the 360, I imagine if one was to wait for a while, maybe another year or so, you'll probably...eventually see another price drop. How much is hard to say, they're already relatively inexpensive (I think you can get a 250 GB one for under $200 right now), but I could see them ending up around $149.99 or even lower eventually. |
