#StealMyIdentity: Fraudsters use paycheck selfies to steal bank details

"Federal prosecutors in Minnesota announced charges Tuesday against 28 people accused of participating in a conspiracy to cash counterfeit checks with bank details gleaned from sources including Instagram photos.
Law enforcement officials say the group obtained account numbers and bank routing information from victims by searching for Instagram photos with the hashtag #myfirstpaycheck.
A search for that hashtag on the photo-sharing service Wednesday yielded nearly 300 hits, many with the bank details on checks clearly visible."

If you make something idiot proof, the universe will just make a better idiot. Clearly the universe is winning in the idiot arms race.

First, you have to give the criminals props for coming up with the idea. Obviously this isn't something that people would think about when posting a picture of their paycheck. Even worse, they may not care because the bank account information is that of their employer, not themselves. Furthermore if you're getting your first paycheck you're probably younger and don't have the experience to know that what may seem like a harmless photo can cause major issues.

I agree they're probably young, but this isn't just stupid it's ignorant, and an indictment of everyone/everything who raised them, from parents to schools to society.
