Check your phone bills

"the agency has made it clear they intend to raise the current e-rate tax on traditional phone lines -- currently around a dollar a month"

First of all, I challenge anyone to produce a phone bill that has a one dollar e-rate tax on it. I think it is much higher than that. And the reason the tax is going up is that the tax base (i.e., traditional phone lines) is going down, as more people cut the cord.

But wireless is also subject to the tax, and with the increase in the number of wireless phones swamping the decrease in the number of traditional phones, the overall base is going up, so why is the tax going up instead of down?

Because instead of capping the total pot of money, the FCC is now increasing it to spend even more.
