Search the internet from context menu in Windows Explorer?Does anyone know of an "easy" way to add a "Search Google" to Windows Explorer right click context menu? I would like to be able to right click on files in folders and search from them on the internet.
Thanks

Seems sort of a weird idea. The point of a context menu is the context -- that you're doing something to or with the thing you just clicked on.
What would you be searching for?
(My answer to your actual question is "no, I don't know of such a thing" -- but I'm just curious about what you want) |

FileAlyser » www.safer-networking.org ··· ealyzer/It is set on the context menu and when it opens, one of the tabs produce a search engine option. Process Explorer does too, however it isn't quite doing what you are requesting. |

Re: Search the internet from context menu in Windows Explorer?Ultimate Windows Context Menu CustomizerContext Menu, Location -> Files Add/Edit Item: Text: Google Search
Command: C:\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe -url http://www.google.com/search?q=%1
(Adjust as needed. Looks to work.) Actually that's not quite correct as %1 sends the file path+name, where I imagine all you'll want is the filename(s). Tried %~nx1 but that's not working either. Instead of sending a "command" directly, suppose you could call a batch file instead& that might allow more leeway? |

There are options such as these by using tools or working with the registry yourself. ShellMenuViewHow to Add Any Application to the Windows Desktop Right-Click Menu |

Re: Search the internet from context menu in Windows Explorer?Call it Internet Search or Yahoo Search, whatever works for you. Change to your wanted browser & search engine. Adjusted as needed. Googlesearch.bat needs to be somewhere, so where ever you put it adjust the second REG ADD line to coincide. If more then one file is selected in Everything (or Windows Explorer or whatever) ... oh, I haven't gotten that far yet. This is only set to search for "files", though you could do similar for "directories". ------- from a command line (might need Admin level, not sure?: REG ADD "HKLM\software\Classes\*\shell\Google Search" /d "Google Search" REG ADD "HKLM\software\Classes\*\shell\Google Search\Command" /d "C:\BIN\Googlesearch.bat ""%1""" Googlesearch.bat set xGOOGLESEARCH=%~nx1
cmd /c C:\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe -url http://www.google.com/search?q=%xGOOGLESEARCH%

XP did. I am surprised Windows 8 doesn't. When was it done away with? |

I don't know - I never used it in the first place, so never actually noticed it. As you can tell from my very first post in the topic, it doesn't seem to me like it fits there, anyway.
I suspect it came and went along with the fantasy of seamless integration of desktop and web. That's not necessarily a bad idea in isolation, but it founders on the rocks of reality when you think about different domains of trust: I very much want to know where things come from. |

Re: Search the internet from context menu in Windows Explorer? Thanks for all your feedback guys.
But I think I have given up on this. There just seems to be no easy way to do this. |

WinPatrol PLUS has this option:
"Windows Explorer Integration"
When this option is checked a menu selection that says "WinPatrol PLUS Info..." is added when right-clicking on a file in Windows Explorer. The new menu item will only appear for .exe and .dll file types but will allow you to check out the information available without opening WinPatrol's main tabbed interface. This feature is available to WinPatrol PLUS members but free users will still receive the Community feedback data when available. |
