cap on excess data charges

Hi everyone,

sorry for the newb question. I was under the impression that there was a cap on excess download charges in Canada? and that it was set to 30$ is this correct or false?

thank you

Nope. Individual ISP's sometimes have a maximum cap, but its not a universal practice and definitely not a CRTC or government mandated thing.

In 2013 the CRTC implemented a "Wireless Code of Conduct" which is basically "diet regulation" for mobile service providers.

This regulation states that excess data charges for roaming must not exceed $100 per month, and $50 for data overages in general (in-territory use).

This has been implemented in different ways by different carriers.

Here is the link:

They only have to suspend the data at those thresholds. Consumers are given the choice of incurring more (uncapped) charges.

That's correct - but it's up to the carriers how to implement. I'd be glad to hear stories of how different providers have done this - is it universal that you simply express consent for the charges and continue to get dinged?

Yes, you express consent after you hit your $50 max, you get dinged until the provider is tired of you using up the bandwidth haha.
