Dual WAN is not working in my new RT-AC87R!Hey guys, I have 2 modems (both are the same) with 2 connections taken from the same ISP, one is connected to Router's WAN port (as Primary) and the other to the 2nd LAN port as Ethernet LAN (Secondary). I've selected Load Balancing with the default settings. The problem is that the right LED light is turned to RED and I get internet drops out a lot! I have no trouble using a single line with dual WAN turned off! I'm using the latest firmware!
Now: 1) How to make it work properly?! 2) I need the router to give the second line bandwidth to the 2nd request (i.e. youtube video/2nd download instance), should I change 3:1 load balancing configuration to something else?
Your help means the world to me! Thank you!
Cheers, Salaam |

Not much to be found by way of documentation on the Asus web site. I'd suggest you post on the ASUS forum for your router. |

It's not worth it! Take a look:

THe problem maybe that you have the same ISP and all the same settings. Not sure on that router. Are you sure the second one is setup like a WAN as well. IF you have it as an ethernet lan secondary you do not have the dual wan setup properly.
Your setup makes no sense. Better to ask for one bigger pipe. Dual wan is primarily for redundancy to ensure 24-7 access. If you simply want to control priority of who uses bandwidth when is better handled by other functionality QOS etc............. |

I don't think it's related to the ISP since the router gets different IPs from the two lines! Should I change any settings for the Ethernet LAN while used as a Secondary WAN? Dual WAN is also used for load balancing which increases the total throughput by the available bandwidth of the two WANs! |

You get different IP addresses, but is it the same Gateway address? You may need to put a basic router in between the modem and secondary WAN port just to change the IP's. I've seen this situation before on dual WAN setups using the same provider. |

Actually, they have the same Gateway Address! Should I change one of them using its modem? Thanks for the input! |

You can't change the gateway address from the provider. You have to add an additional router to change the addresses provided to the second WAN port so the main router does not see the same gateway address on both WAN ports. |

Which goes to show that manufacturers or programmers are simply not expecting one to use the same ISP. I suggest you simply ask for a fatter pipe from your single ISP. |

I've seen this setup in hotels. They use two circuits from the same provider so that if one modem dies, they don't lose all access, only half their capacity. |

Which is a very expensive way of having a second modem ready to go LOL. Buying a second WAN LINE. WAY WAY more likely to lose an ISP for whatever reason than a modem. Better to have a separate ISP for redundancy |

The Asus RT-AC87R is not a dual WAN product so the kind of setup you want to accomplish is not possible with factory firmware. You can accomplish your objective if you went with 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT --- however I am not sure whether DD-WRT currently have firmware ready to go for this model. RMerline also is working on a firmware for this product but I have no idea where its at --- check the SmallNetBuilder site for Merlin's work. |

Too funny, that explains the ops issues. My bad for assuming he/she knew what product he purchased. LOL |

Re: Dual WAN is not working in my new ASUS RT-AC87R!ASUS RT-AC87R Dual WAN support: "Configure one of the LAN ports as a WAN to use two internet connections, either to share internet traffic between them or so that one can be used as a backup connection should one connection fail."

Re: Dual WAN is not working in my new RT-AC87R!Not sure where you got that. I just went through the user guide and there was no mention of it in the fine print or in chapter headings. They do have cell phone connectivity capability discussed. » www.asus.com/ca-en/Netwo ··· RTAC87U/» www.asus.com/ca-en/Netwo ··· cations/does note a dual link but pretty sure that refers to the single wan discussed and the 3g-4g connection. |

Scroll down to the section (Life in the fast LAN) then press the right arrow > You can also google (RT-AC87U Dual WAN) to find some websites that mention this feature found on this high-end new model. (Note that my 87R version is sold by BestBuy while U is sold by any other retailers)
By the way, I found this info in some place: "ASUS RT-AC87U dual WAN is still work in progress for load balancing! As for failover, it's only applicable with 3G/LTE USB modems and not with another WAN ~ work in progress. Teaming is still work in progress as well." |

Asus Fast Lane CAPABILITY is work in progress and has been for a very long time. If you check for DD-WRT availability like I suggested earlier you may be able to accomplish your objective but NOT with the current factory firmware. ASUS like many others LIKE to HYPE stuff that have absolutely no bearing to reality --- do not believe everything they offer up as available --- its just hype. If its ready to go it would be documented in the User guide. |

At this point, may need to get some other gear with (more) developed loadbalancing capabilities. Offhand, Zyxel, Cisco RV series, Edgerouter Lite or a spare PC with a *nix router distro are your possible candidates for this. I'm with Anav as well why you didn't get a bigger pipe with your existing provider... isn't there another ISP provider in the area? My 00000010bits Regards |
|

Because we don't have a bigger pipe around here :/ |
