E-mail Access question

At »workaround.org/ispmail/w ··· oundcube it said this about Roundcube.
quote:
RoundCube is a web application written in PHP that provides a user-friendly web interface that speaks IMAP with any mail server.

On to my questions..

#1 Is that the only web application written that provides a web interface so that users can use their web browser?

#2 If not: Do all web applications written that provide a web interface so that users can use their web browser, speak IMAP with any mail server?

#3 Is so to question two: If an ISP offers SMTP, POP3, and a web based UI, why would they not offer IMAP so that users can receive e-mail over plain IMAP (an email client like Thunderbird)?

Thank you

[EDIT] Changed my mind: While that is useful it does not have to be a user-friendly web interface...

1. No.

2. No, Some only do pop3/smtp Openwebmail for example did pop3 but did emulate mail folders but it wasn't true imap. It may have also required mail being stored on same server. Don't remember. Someone also using thunderbird wouldn't be able to see additional folders.

3. Some do just don't advertise it. Thunderbird can work just fine with pop3. Another reason they may not support imap is maybe more people store mail in separate folders. But if they give you X amount of storage what does it matter.

What should a "user-friendly web interface" look like?

Upon reflection, while that is useful it does not have to be a user-friendly web interface.
