And the beat goes on....

I wait a minimum of 7 days post-patch Tuesday before installing updates - and this is only after thoroughly searching Microsoft forums for what is becoming a monthly nightmare for those willing to be guinea pigs.

EDIT: The update has been pulled by Microsoft.

I have the patch and thus far everything appears to be normal. Running Win7 Ultimate.

Edit: forgot to state OS in initial post

I can tell you on my Win8/2012 R2 machines everything is normal, but my win 7 machines are all fubard. Even though everything is fine on my Win8/2012R2 machines (testing), I will not be pushing this to production.

All Windows 7 stations we have installed this on have not had any adverse affects. We have tested it on a couple stations and we have deployed it to 20 others as of today.

I have one of three Win7 machines experiencing UAC prompts on multiple Windows modules, not just MMC mentioned in the linked thread. I'll try backing off the mentioned fix sometime tomorrow and see if that fixes it.

Just doing some due diligence and passing along info. If it works and you don't have any issues awesome!

Microsoft has pulled the KB3004394 patch (as Mister M said) and recommends that you uninstall it.

»answers.microsoft.com/en ··· a?page=2
said by Pinaki Mohanty, Microsoft Forum Moderator :
Some customers are experiencing an issue with Knowledge Base 3004394 and we have expired the affected updates. We encourage Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 customers who are impacted, to uninstall the updates/KB3004394. Once ready, we will re-release the updates.
If you can't uninstall KB3004394, Microsoft released a new update KB3024777 that may help get it uninstalled:

There are also some other suggestions in this thread that may help if you are having trouble uninstalling:

Yup, I too check forums like this one to see if anyone has complained about issues before running WU. If so, waiting is the right option since as we see here they've acknowledged the issue and pulled the patch.

Installing KB3024777 did indeed resolve the problem on the one of my systems that was borked by KB3004394.

Interesting note, after uninstalling KB3004394, the patch KB3024777 nor KB3004394 appear in WU for Win7 machines.

For 3004394 they pulled it within 12 hours or something like that, not sure about 3024777.

My home computer, which I updated Tuesday afternoon, got the 'update' patch to remove 3004394. My work computer, which was updated Thursday, didn't have 3004394 installed at all. I remember it originally said 21 updates to install, but when done, said 20 installed and 1 unneeded.

Dumb question... How does simply changing the root servers break installing software?

They must've pulled it before I installed the update. I don't see it in my desktop or laptop, thankfully.

The update evidently corrupts the Windows certificates on some Windows 7 computers so all system files are seen by Windows as unsigned. Hence the UAC prompts even on Admin accounts. If Windows thinks all system files are unsigned that would probably stop any installs from Windows Updates until the KB is uninstalled and Windows again sees system files as signed. This was one of the answers in the thread referenced in the OP's post.

It also screws up Windows 7 clients connecting to Windows Server 2012R2 print servers that still have the update installed on them (although Microsoft claims it doesn't affect 2012/R2, it does). I kept getting a printer driver installation failure 0x0000002, fired up Process Monitor and discovered complaints about "certificate expiration." Removed the update from my 2012R2 print server and bam, driver installs just fine on multiple Windows 7 clients.
