I'm just ready for the super duper special edition four hour versions to release on blu-ray so I can marathon all three movies. I love doing that with LOTR. Kills an entire day though... the entire franchise will take a weekend.

Colbert broadcast so much Tolkien love over the years they kind of owed him.
I'm not sure why he read those names when a slow screen text roll would do.

Can movie execs really be that stupid on how they release their digital movies?
on p2p there is already a russian cam, and this movie is already out in germany.
is it really so impossible to release a movie like this world wide on the same day

I'll probably see this early Sunday the 20th or the 28th when IMAX is $14.
Here in NYC we have 76'x97' screens - that's like a vertical basketball court.
3 hours... I hope there's some no cgi banter in the middle so I can go pee

From what I've read on the topic, it is released in those countries first so they can get it to market before it is counterfeited. Since our domestic market is less prone to piracy they are more assured of their profits.

I saw hobbit IMAX today. not much story, a bit of nostalgia, and a lot of very lopsided fighting and confusing strategy. I suspect we'll see another 30 minutes once the extended dvd comes out as i felt there was a lot missing from this movie. many things seem to happen along the way without adequate preamble or epilogue.

I saw it today (in 2D, not IMAX) and thought it was easily the best of the three films. Nothing stood out to me as confusing or missing. That may be because I watched one and two yesterday in anticipation of seeing the third, and there were a lot of little details that carried over they didn't go out of their way to explain, but I thought overall it was great. It continued the tradition of adding a lot of story that's not in the original book and may or may not even be in Tolkien lore, but I knew that going in and am no longer as jaded about that as I once was. I wasn't a huge fan of the first two until I sat and watched them concurrently. Taken as a whole I really enjoyed the series.

I'll be buying the extended edition blu-ray boxed set to go along with my LOTR set and then I can bug my better half for entire weekends at a time!

Saw it in IMAX 3D 48FPS with ADDED UNICORN FILTERS and thought it was very enjoyable.

Definitely felt stretched in some places the Tauriel/dwarf love story was so forced and did not hit me in the feels at all when he died. Also, people getting spiked left and right should show more blood.

Special effects and action scenes were top notch though.

Just got back and while we really enjoyed it..........I've got some Q's.

Gandalf is a wizard but never used his magic during the battles...........how come?

Tauriel had a white glow around her while she was curing Fili [in the 2nd movie] and he said that she was the one..........one what?

And Thranduil tells his son Legolas to go find some elf named Strider...anyone know who it is?

Still all in all ,great way to end it...wild battle scenes with Azog.

Gandalf's brother summoned the Eagles and Bears to join the battle to kill orcs and war bats,
while Gandalf's ability to block and kill orcs with a sword and long poll is magic enhanced.
in Tolkien magic fights other magic, they don't use it much against physical fighting.
even the Witch King of Angmar and his Nazgul hosted deadly curses to fight mortals.

also Gandalf had just been magically exhausted after a long incarceration by the orcs.

Tauriel is not from the Original Toikien, so ask Peter Jackson.
she is portrayed as a Silvan Elf, a subclass race from Legolas.
remember that confusion forest with huge spiders? that's her original home.
in LoTR you meet yet another second and third race of elves,
who's leaders you see briefly near Hobbit's end - also Peter Jackson's doing.

it's actually pretty ridiculous that those three* should show up there alone,
unless that entire battle was magical so they projected themselves there.
remember that Sauron is a ring based projection as he has no living body.
remember, at the end gandalf was taken away on his brother's rabbit sled,
and his brother was physically nearby waiting for an opening to rescue him.
*Galadriel, Elrond and Saruman the White

Strider = The Ranger = Aragorn (all 3 names were used throughout LoTR)

Azog was not alive during the Hobbit or LoTR either - more of Peter Jackson's fiction.
