Warning - CableCARD users - Windows 7 Update KB3004394
by jasonl » Wed Dec 10, 2014 11:29 am

This message applies to people using Windows Media Center with a CableCARD tuner on Windows 7 only.

This update, labeled as "Update for Microsoft Windows (KB3004394)" has been found to break the PlayReady DRM system used by Windows Media Center to access protected content. Installing it will result in WMC displaying a message that a PlayReady update is needed. When attempting to update, the update fails.

If you have automatic updates enabled and have Windows Update set to install optional updates, this may be installed automatically on your PC.

To resolve the issue, uninstall the update. To do this:
1. Go into Control Panel
2. Select Uninstall a program
3. Click on View installed updates on the left
4. Locate Update for Microsoft Windows (KB3004394), click on it, and click Uninstall
5. Reboot

Re: Atten: HDHomeRun Prime Users

Is that really correct? Info I got is that 3024777 uninstalls 3004394 and that only on Win7 SP1 and 2008 R2 SP1 machines.

Nope, but I looked on my WSUS and couldn't find 3004384. On the other hand there's lots of info about 3004394 and what it does/brakes.

RGR that.
Fat fingers, eh?

edit:
If you install 3024777 it will remove 3004394. Probably easier than go through uninstall

Re: [TV] Atten: HDHomeRun Prime Users

I'm a purest like the author of this thread....I uninstall, reboot and reinstall and often follow that with a reboot.

Windows should be more like Linux where 99% of the time you dont have to reboot for updates.

I just installed the patch3024777, it however did not remove 3004394 on my machine, wondering if I should remove it manually

kernel update 109 days ago, my 2k8r2 though, lasts only from one patch Tuesday to another. 2012 is slightly better but not by much...

It will remain listed in windows updates as successfully installed, although it'll disappear from list of installed programs...

Nothing to worry about...

Since it is a DRM issue then it should also impact systems with Centon and ATI cable card tuners.

It does actually...both SD and Ceton have warned their customers...
