Weed wacker?I failed in using it and ripped up the grass. What should I have done to trim the grass growing up against the fence? |

I think it's just thin there because the grass was tall and untrimmed. Trim each time you mow and you won't have the problem. |

Trying to trim along a chain link fence with a weed wacker is near impossible. Most people I know use vegetation killer in a narrow strip directly under the fence. I don't have a fence now but that's how I did it at my previous house. |

I have cyclone fence just like that. Mine was also installed too close to the ground. I dig under it with a sharpshooter and then try and keep it maintained with the weed wacker. If I stay on it with the weed wacker, it can go years without having to be re-dug.
If you have a small dog, you'll want to make sure you don't leave an escape route. |

No dog. Is the fence supposed to move at the bottom? Some areas seem wedged into the ground and some areas move. |

Chain-link fences are a weed whacker's worst enemy.
A careful application of round-up along the bottom of the fenceline can rectify that problem. |

Normally they are loose at the bottom. The bottom is just slightly above the ground but sometimes it's embedded in the ground to keep pets from crawling underneath it.
It's certainly not something you have to worry about right now in Rochester. If it's not already it will soon be buried in snow until springtime!
As suggested earlier most people spray directly under the fence with Roundup or some other type of vegetation killer so they don't have to worry about trimming. |

I took the picture last week then we finally got a few inches to stick on the ground. It was nice to still be able to work on things outside this late in the year. I will try the roundup route later this week when the snow melts. |

Roundup is much more effective when the grass is growing. I would imagine by now it has gone dormant for the year. |

Don't angle it down. You will use a lot of string though. I also use my foot to bend the bottom of the fence and trim the grass. Have to do both sides and that should get the vast majority of the time. It is a pita... |

Weed wacking is a PITA. Roundup works just fine with much less effort. |

With the pitch in our yard I am very concerned with erosion during hard rains and on one fence the neighbors have a dog and I am not going to spray there. I rarely cut it - maybe 3 times per summer grand total.
I know it is a PITA as noted but wanted to give the OP some tips on weedwahcking.... |
