[Modem] What modem to replace Zyxel P660R-D1

My Zyxel modem (Prestige 660R-61) failed a couple weeks ago, and I'm now using what Earthlink calls a "refurbished" Zyxel P660R-D1 that Earthlink sent a couple years ago. I have a 5-year-old MacBook using OS 10.4.11 and Earthlink service. Download speeds with the current modem are about 200 kilobits per second, where the previous modem got at least 600. Neither is good, but right now, I'd be happy with 600 again. Earthlink says my DSL line is clear, so I figure I need a new and faster modem. What should I get?

A faster Modem will not change the DSL Sync Rate. However bad phone lines, missing or bad DSL filters and noise on the phone line (the kind that you can hear after pressing "1" to dismiss the dial-tone) can drop your maximum attainable speed to lower levels.

First update the Modem firmware.

Then test at NID and at your current plug in location.

»EarthLink DSL FAQ »How do I test at my NID? What does it look like?

What speeds do you get here using this test and what do you get when connected directly at the NID?
