And PC Gamer's Game of the Year 2014 is...Alien: Isolation
Agree? Disagree? |

I will have to disagree. Would have much rather seen it go to Transistor or Divinity: Original Sin. |

Haven't bought it yet.
I saw the most credible high praise for the new Dragon Age.
Other highlights of 2014 are Elite Dangerous, WoW: Warlods of Draenor, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, COD:AW, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Titanfall, Divinity: Original Sin, Lords of the Fallen (at least according to google). |

Alien: Isolation looks cool, but I'd like a better explanation as to why they picked this.

Disagree. Even though Alien Isolation is pretty damn cool. No where near game of the year when you compare all the other cool releases.
Shadow of Mordor would be a top contender for me. Damn....that combat in that game is fucking gettin' it.
Dragon Age: Inquisition. Another awesome RPG with beautiful visuals, cool story line and a shit ton of content.
and then....
Transistor. Bad ass game, and the sound track is so good, I even bought that too. |

Alien: Isolation definitely provided one of the most atmospheric experiences of the year and was definitely one of my favorites. I can see a case being made for it as GOTY, although its mass appeal is somewhat lacking as it is a slow and tense ride. It won't be for everyone. Shadow of Mordor and DA:I are other standouts. |

I'm not sure I agree either (despite loving Alien: Isolation) but I'm heartened at the redemption this may bring to the very idea of Alien games. |

Shadow of Mordor. Dat combat...
I must be out of the loop. Alien: Isolation never even flew across my radar. |

Survival horror is too small a niche to deserve a GOTY award I would have thought. |

Honestly, I can't disagree. Maybe I didn't play all the right games this year, but I played a lot. Certainly most, if not all of the blockbuster games. I thought Isolation was great. It looked fantastic. Level design was great. Sound was great. And the gameplay, once you focus and get into it, is great as well. I get really critical with games and, while this one got on my nerves at first because I kept dying, I ended up getting totally immersed and loved it. Personally, it was the Alien game I've been waiting for. |

I haven't played it yet, but I'm looking forward to trying over the holidays. I got the Game+DLC on GOG.com for ~30ish last week.

Looking forward to getting into this one myself. It's all I'm really looking forward to on the Steam sale (besides maybe the new Telltale games). |

I think I'm going to agree. Alien: Isolation was fresh. The quality of the visual details in this game was really surprising to me. So much so, that I actually pulled out my Alien Blu-ray Anthology collection and re-watched all of the extended versions. This game showed some serious dedication. Well deserved, IMO. |

I was playing Alien Isolation last night with my 7.1 headphones on.
Dayum. You gotta play with a nice pair of head phones. There is just so much cool ambient noises and just creepy shit in the back ground. |

More Alien 'verse games could be fun. I would love to see another take on the Aliens setting that does not go through 20 developers like Colonial Marines did. Because the original teaser for that game looked awesome. And then it went through multiple dev houses and each one tried to rebuild the game in some way.
And due to that we got instead of the potential for a great shooter based in this setting we got a steaming pile with a good name on outside of the flaming bag left on the doorstep of gaming. |

Considering I can't find any info on what games were in the running, nor the criteria the judges used to determine "best" game, I rate PCGamers to be worst award givers of 2014. |

Yes the lighting was really good, and the sound effects were amazing. I liked the faces too for the most part, although sometimes the mouths didn't jibe with the words. Lack of anti-aliasing was noticeable, plus the Alien AI was damn near omniscient in the last stage which was rage inducing. But overall I loved it.
Upon reflection I'd have to say I agree with this GOTY award, with Shadow of Mordor being a close second. I never played Transistor or Divinity so this could easily change. |

I haven't finished Transistor yet, but that's a sexy, stylish game, and the mechanics are pretty innovative, I'd say it's a must buy. I've also bought Divinity:OS, but I haven't gotten around to trying yet, so the jury's still out for me. EQ |

Transistor is just beautiful, but it's more of a story than a game to me. Still one of the best from the small indies though. |

I have yet to finish a few games but I think it will be very hard to bump Transistor from my number one spot for this year.
But I agree totally, it is more of an experience than a game. |

Dayum. You gotta play with a nice pair of head phones. There is just so much cool ambient noises and just creepy shit in the back ground. Occulus Rift, a good amp+DAC combo and a nice pair of headphone is all you will need to achieve unprecedented levels of immersion now. As soon as OR CV1 comes out I'm jumping on it like a teenager on his first fleshlight. |
