Sony wants Idris Elba to be next BondThis would prove to be interesting, either the movie will completely bomb because people can't get their heads around a black bond, or Sony will be held up as leading force for affirmative action. » www.thedailybeast.com/ar ··· ond.html |

He could do it. Though I'd rather see him stick to Luther. And yes, there is a Luther movie in the works. » metro.co.uk/2014/01/03/l ··· 4248534/Kinda curious as to why they haven't tried resurrecting Matt Helm. |

Or, you know, he is actually judged on his merits as an actor. Why does it always have to be about the color of his skin vs. his ability to perform? (akin Michael Sam bitching about being cut from the NFL because he was gay--no, he was cut because he's a mediocre football player, but I digress...) I think a black bond would be a refreshing reboot--he will have big shoes to fill following Daniel Craig's brutal, visceral style, which I personally liked a lot, but Elba was a complete BAMF as Heimdall in in Thor, and did a decent job in Pacific Rim (even if the movie was complete shit). I haven't checked out Luther, so I can't claim to be the definitive Elba critic, but I like what I've seen so far. I would say the only mark against him is that his badass style seems similar to Craig's. I am hoping that whoever follows Craig doesn't feel pressured to keep up the same Bourne-esque style if that's not their thing. |

I know chances of it happening are practically zero with the cow still having plenty to milk, but I wish they'd just retire Bond and replace him with a new 007.
Or just do a story with any of the other double zero agents.
Opens up so much room for the creativity. without anyone needing to compare who is the best Bond. |

Because that's how people are judged, it's always the superficial first then everything thing else second. Do you think for a momment that if does get picked, the press will say "what a great actor he is", "he fits the bond role pefectly", no the story will be about how Bond is about to become a black man. |

Because the media is fucking stupid and hypes up superficial differences as clickbait or viewbait to get ad revenue.
I would hope we could hold ourselves to a higher standard and discuss his professional merits as an actor. |

If he's cool and British I don't care. But is it Sony's decision? The hackers may prefer Dennis Rodman. |

I haven't seen enough of his (Idris Elba) work to form a strong opinion either way. I'm fairly sure he is more then capable of taking on the role though or we probably wouldn't even know who the guy was in the first place. So clearly he is making a name for himself in the field.
If it happens my guess is that some strong writing and a topnotch performance should be able to smooth things over with the naysayers.
Bond is kind of a role that is made for a wide range of actors or the industry has shoehorned a hell of a lot of different actors into it. Simon Pegg, wouldn't IMO make a good Bond because he isn't quite the type but Idris Elba can bring more of what is needed for the part.
Either way I am not a big Bond fan so I definitely don't take a purist way of thinking with me in this respect.
I say let him do it, I'll watch it. |

I would totally watch a Simon Pegg Bond movie. It'd be like Hot Fuzz but as an action spy movie instead of an action cop flick. Quick, someone call Nick Frost and Edger Wright. |

It would be cool if they made a new "Bond" movie using Elba as the lead but a different agent. The Bond schtick is old. They could get JJ Abrams to direct so he could get the franchise hat trick. |

I didn't say I wouldn't watch it,......such a thing could be great fun,... However, I don't know how seriously I could take it. I don't think I've ever seen Simon Pegg do a totally serious role. Bond in a Monty Python kind of way (that is to say humorous), sure but not Bond in a serious "Bond, James Bond" kind of way. |

That would be like a remake of the original Casino Royal...with David Nivens and Woody Allan...that would be a remake that Simon Pegg could do. But as for Elba doing Bond...I like the actor but would rather he be a different 00x than Bond...they could fit it in the mythology easy and not have to deal with all the backstory that is Bond... LUCKILY it doesn't matter What Sony wants.
The Broccoli family and the Danjaq company have final say on EVERYTHING James Bond film related! They have maintained firm control over the direction and content of all Bond films. Which is one reason why the franchise has remained stable and profitable this long.
And while I really like the work that Idris Elba puts out; I'm not sure he'd be a Great Bond and don't think a change in this direction is needed. |
