Sony PlayStation and Xbox Networks Hacked and Offline Since Christmas Eve

Microsoft and Sony have been working to restore internet platforms for their Xbox and PlayStation gamers' consoles.

Attacks disabled the online services on Christmas Day making it difficult for users to log on.

A message on the Xbox status page on Friday said that live core services were "up and running". Meanwhile, PlayStation said its engineers were continuing to work on "network issues".

A hacking group called Lizard Squad claimed to have caused the problems.

PREVIOUSLY, 7:46 PM December 24: The PlayStation Network was down beginning in late afternoon, as attempts to access the site returned error messages that the network was down. A check of Internet monitoring sites showed thousands of complaints.

There are also some Twitter posts by Lizard Squad, the anonymous hacker group that attacked Sony, offering Microsoft gift cards and selling Social Security numbers for two specific people for $500.

The U.S.A. Feds(aka: Copyright Mafia global enforcers) are going to be pissed, even more, at Kim DotCom

Diplomacy in action:
»www.usatoday.com/story/t ··· 0910671/

All that despite an effort by Kim Dotcom, the founder of sharing site Megaupload, who provided the group claiming responsibility for the network shutdowns with free, lifetime vouchers for his new MegaPrivacy website designed to provide encrypted cloud-storage. ...

In exchanges on Twitter the group has said that thanks to the receipt of the vouchers it has stopped its DDos (distributed denial of service) attack. Both networks were still having problems Friday morning;

»torrentfreak.com/kim-dot ··· -141226/

Mega founder Kim Dotcom has saved Christmas for many Playstation and Xbox gamers. In what he describes as a Christmas Miracle, Kim Dotcom appears to have stopped Lizard Squad's DDoS attacks by handing out 3,000 vouchers for premium Mega accounts, worth $99 a piece. ...

“Hi @ LizardMafia, I want to play #Destiny on XBOX Live. I’ll give your entire crew Mega lifetime premium vouchers if you let us play. Cool?” he tweeted.

“Obviously, diplomacy works. I recommend that the U.S. Government gives it a try. #MakeLoveNotWar #UseMegaVouchers,” Kim noted.

Of course there’s no guarantee that Lizard Squad will keep their promise during the days to come, but Dotcom said he will render the vouchers useless if attacks resume

Ultimately all this attack shows is the problem of running a global network on 70's technology anymore. You can DDOS pretty much anything, so what.

Some group that's connected to Anonymous (they call themselves FinestSquad) has posted a crap ton of detailed info including email addresses, Skype, and even real-world addresses of several members of LizardSquad.

Why is online gaming and Tor being targetted?

Perhaps the perps view gaming sites and Tor simply as the lowest-hanging fruit for making the biggest public splash? Why does a vandal spray-paint on the walls of buildings or destroy public art displays? Moreover, there have always been those among us who, for reasons of inner disturbance, just can't abide seeing somebody else enjoy something... they feel compelled to rise up and deface or destroy.

Why PSN went down: Lizard Squad’s capabilities ‘far exceed typical DDoS groups’
quote:
The threat is real, and it is only getting worse.

The group that has claimed responsibility for taking down the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live online gaming services is capable of doing real damage, according to NexusGuard chief scientist Terrence Gareau. NexusGuard is a cyber-security firm that specializes in dealing with distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, which is precisely what overwhelmed Sony’s and Microsoft’s servers on Christmas and the following days.
