I'm looking for a new flash light. I'm tired of those cheap 8 packs home depost sells. I really want one that more like a spot light. The kind with a handle. Home Depot had a rayovac but I didn't like the trigger button. I want one that when you click the button once it stays on. I don't wanna have to hold the button down or press another button to hold the button on.
How much light are you looking for? The big, handhelds you mention put out a tremendous amount of light. I think they have the press to hold on because they can get warm quickly.
If you don't need to light up a stadium, I'd suggest checking out Maglite. We have several of them and they are incredibly bright and good with batteries. We have some mini maglights that we use when walking the dogs and they put out a ton of light. Not sure if it's enough to fit your needs but I'd recommend them in a heartbeat as they are well built and we've never had any issues with them.
I got a Fenix LD41 LED flashlight a couple years ago and absolutely love it. Definitely would recommend it. It's not cheap, I think it was around $80, but it definitely puts out a powerful beam of light if needed, but also has 4 different intensity levels when less light is needed.
Completely waterproof, and it takes only 4 standard AA cells. I put Eneloop rechargeables in mine which works well. I can easily get 7+ hours of runtime on intensity level 3 of 4.
It has only a single powerful LED with a reflector so it emits a very bright main beam, as opposed to those cheap flashlights that use many LEDs and are more like a flood light than a beam.
One other feature I really like is that unlike the cheap LED flashlights, this one has a constant-current LED driver circuit in it. This means the intensity remains the same even as the batteries begin to discharge right up until the batteries are almost completely depleted. Cheap flashlights don't have this and will slowly dim over time as the batteries weaken.
I don't have much to add. I've been looking for a decent flashlight for years now (belt holster style). I like having one handy at all times while working. It seems like they are all either crap, crazy expensive, or both. I hate Maglite. They are the worst. I've had 2 of their AA LED lights in a row that were lemons. I usually just buy the bulk crap Chinese LED flashlights at Lowe's Depot or Harbor Freight (or anywhere I see them cheap). If I lose them or they shit the bed - oh well.
I do have a Milwaukee M18 Worklight and a M18 Flashlight (both LED) that I really like. They are a bit bulky to carry around.
I have been very satisfied with this: »www.meritline.com/showpr ··· ht-torch . I had doubts about ordering from an unknown offshore company, but ended up ordering several for family. They were listed as 1000 lumen at the time I bought them, and they sure are bright, with a machined metal case and glass lens. And they are LED (was listed as Cree at one point, too).
They take 18650 LiON batteries (these are the cells that make up a laptop battery), and I would recommend a 4000 mah or better (Meritline doesn't seem to have any 4000's listed right now, but there are some listed on ebay). I have had very good luck with Meritline's "UltraFire 4000mAh 3.6-4.2V Rechargeable 18650 Lithium Batteries", which seem to be out of stock. With a fully charged battery, I can get 2 solid hours at the middle brightness.
Very satisfied for about $20 each with batteries and charger. And if something happens, I'm not out $100.
If you do order from them, it will take about 3 weeks to arrive. Slow boat and all that I suppose.
I want something brighter then those cheap hd bulk flash lights. Has to have a pistol grip. And a wider output then those cheap ones. Look at the link I posted. The only think I don't like about that one is when you press the trigger to turn it on you have to either hold it or press a button on side to lock it on. I want one that I press to click and it stays on and press it again to turn it off
The Waypoint can be operated using 4 C sized batteries or directly from a 12V DC cigarette lighter port using the adapter. The trigger switch is located on the pistol grip of the light. Depress the button once to turn the light on or off. The mode switch is located on the side of the light. Rotate the mode switch to select high, low, or strobe.
my strong recommendation for a all around light is a Fenix LD22. they do expect you to use high end rechargeable with some of these lights. i strongly recommend Eneloop's

I bought the tk10 years back and it's still going strong.
Have this one as a work light: »www.amazon.com/gp/produc ··· 37EQ89WJ In daily use it's been dropped from 20 ft onto concrete, submerged and abused. Highly recommend it - best I've used.
I have Maglite, Fenix and Streamlight flashlights. I don't have any problem with Maglite other than technologically they aren't that great. For your cost to performance and function I prefer Fenix over Streamlight.
Ok, I have a light for you. The wife told me she wanted a flashlight that could light up our pasture at night (we have a coyote problem). I told her "Just find something" - she found this monster:
The beam easily illuminates out to 1,000 feet. It is crazy bright. Highly recommended. That Amazon link shows it for about $75 but I think we paid under $50 for ours. Amazon reviews are mixed, I can say I've had no issues with mine. You might want to shop around.
I have those freebie LED lights that people give as promotions-they work great around the house. Mag lights are crap, and I would take a cheep giveaway over them. I learned my lesson about spending money simply to have some serial number engraved on a cheaply built light.
At work, I get ~$150 LED lights as they end up being far cheaper than buying the $50 spot lights that only last a few months. Lead acid batteries don't like being deep cycled. As things have evolved to LED, though, I don't know how things last. I would be worried about some of the cheaper LED lamps being overdriven.
I have found that you will get what you pay for-and when you have an issue, a call will provide any replacement parts gratis. Well, except for Mag-but I bought that at Wal Mart so need I say more.
200 lumens is kind of dim to me-more like a pen flashlight. Those Fenix models look nice.
Also, make sure you have various brightness options: it isn't so much about battery life, but the full wide open brightness can be blinding. Sometimes you need the lamp turned down.
I have about a dozen of these cheap Ultrafire lights that go for about $4 on Amazon »www.amazon.com/Flashligh ··· HF8C66ED. The provide more light than the big multi-cell flashlights and only use 1 AA battery. If you really want them to scream you can put a 14500 rechargeable in them. I got a new Mag-light for Christmas that uses 3 D cells and the little light lit up a coyote at 500 feet just as good as the Mag-light. Of course you can't whack someone in the head with the little light.
Thanks for all the recomendations. And thanks for all the people to actually read my requirements and posted links. Thanks to the people who didn't bother to read and posted links to stuff I wasn't looking for and wasted my time

I'm looking for a new knife. I've tried smaller knives, and I'm not satisfied. I'm looking for one about 3 feet long. Maybe sharpened on both edges with a hilt instead of a handle.
OK, help me out here... I have an old Eveready halogen flashlight which takes 2 D-cell batteries. How many lumens would that output? I have no idea how to compare its brightness to these new fancy LED flashlights.
Besides pointing the beam at things, mainly indoors, I would also stand it on end pointed at the ceiling to illuminate a room during a power failure. So what would be a good Fenix flashlight for that?

the ld22 i mentioned would blow away that eveready, by about a mile
some lights tail stand some don't, you can just put the light in a cup
again battery's are important with these. alkaline are generally not recommended
