How to bridge a 2.5 GHz (802.11 n card) to 5 GHz network

I have a pc with a built in 2.5 GHz n card which I need to connect to a 5 GHz network. Tried a USB adapter, but the 5 GHz signal is very unreliable.

It occurs to me that a range extender such as the Apple Airport Express should be able to connect the 2.5 GHz card as a pass through connection to the 5 GHz network and extend the range of the network. The distance that needs to be covered is less than 50 ft, but there are three walls between the computer and the network and the 5 GHz network appears to be a low power unit.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of connection?

Do you mean 2.4ghz? Bc 2.5ghz is education band.

a) do a wireless site survey with inssider or similar software -- try this thread for options for Macs.

b) confirm that the airport express can "bridge" as you so desire... I forget exactly
if it can, offhand.

c) be aware that such a connection halves the available bandwidth.

A dual band router supported by Openwrt can do this type of bridge. TP-LINK TL-WDR3500 or TL-WDR3600 for example. Some routers may also support this with their stock firmware.

5Ghz has the ability to move data faster, but the higher carrier frequency makes it more likely to NOT penetrate walls or other obstructions. A better radio/antenna combo _may_ do a better job than a USB adapter.

You need to try another USB adapter because they are NOT alike. Try the Edimax AC600 or the Startech AC600.

The TP-LINK TL-WDR3500 is available form NewEgg for a reasonable cost. What needs to be done to make this a wireless bridge? I think I know what you have in mind, but I am not familiar with this equipment.

You install Openwrt, run it as client mode on 5GHz and access point mode on 2.4 GHz.
