[Speed] Sudden Major Issues that techs can not figure out.

Yesterday I had been playing a game online for a couple of hours as well as VOIP chatting. Suddenly it started to storm really bad which included very high winds and it had gotten extremely cold. I then started dropping my internet. It would work for a few minutes and then drop again. I called Comcast and had them send a restart signal. That did not work. I then started restarting all of my hardware. I ultimately eliminated everything but the modem. Nothing had worked. That went on for 9 hours. I called Comcast multiple times throughout the process. I ultimately had a tech come out and look at it the next day.

The tech just left and he said that the line signal was too high. He put an inline thing on the cable to lessen it by 10db. We checked the internet and it seemed stable. My modem would T4 error constantly before, now I only lost connection a couple of times within a 15 minute period. Comcast recently increased my DL speeds from 50mbps to 120 or so. We did some checks and everything seemed fine on his devices, so I decided to run a speed test through 3 different places. The upload speeds were less than 1mbps. It was terrible. He went out and scanned some more stuff and came in stating that he saw my modem reset while he was outside. I said that I didnt notice it.

At that point the said it was most likely the modem because when he manually resets the unit, it will turn on and initialize, then turn off again and then back on before becoming stable. I had a SB6141 and he suggested to get a new modem. He left and told me that he was dead all day and that they should be able to have him do a same day return if needed.

I went to Walmart and picked up a SB6121 and called to have it provisioned. We then checked the upload speed and it was only 2.6mbps. She kept sending reset signals to my modem and we ultimately got it to around 3.6mbps. I asked if she could have someone come back out today and she said the earliest possible was in a week. I refused and told her that the tech said he had nothing for the rest of the day and to request in the notes to have him come back out. She then told me one was available tomorrow. She sent one last reset and we got the same results back, so we ended the call.

I have run some tests following the How To Get Comcast Help Guide, so, I am hoping that you are able to help me. I am able to receive 15mpbs in my area and as of a couple of days ago I was gettings about 18mbps Upstream. I feel that the weather had something to do with it. Perhaps any info that I get here will better help the technician pinpoint the issue so that I have a consistent connection.

- We will leave the wired TpLink Router and two Dlink 8-port switches out of the equation as I know now that they are not the root of the problem and I am running my PC directly to the modem.

A relatively quick and significant drop in temperature, especially when it drops below freezing, can create issues to compromised cable and inadequate/improper cable connections and termination due to the cable physically contracting from the colder temps. A tech will have to come out and perform the necessary testing to check for such issues.

so.. until this storm everything was fine.. after the storm and with two different modems things not so fine..

sounds like a suckout got worse, knocked looser by the wind.

boy those can sometimes be a pain in the ass to find, especially when it is intermittent.

I wonder if they still troubleshoot like back in the day.. one person connected to the tap monitoring while another goes to every line extender, splitter, and amp back to the node to shake the lines..

If he had a suckout would he even get a signal at all ? I think we need to make a new name for this issue. LOL !!

I would think that he would still have signal, but he would most likely have intermittent issues, similar to those you have with a not fully tightened or corroded drop connector.

That is correct.
