Router SuggestionI need a better cable router w/VoIP to replace my Xfinity router. Right now I have a Cisco Model DPC3939 and the range is horrible. I'm just two rooms away and it effects my speed greatly. I don't want to get a extender either.
Any good suggestions? |

Just disable the wireless and use a second router as an access point: » Wireless Networking Forum FAQ » Using a Wireless Router as an Access Point |

2nded.
Also, before you plunk down cash on gear, I'd do some basic wireless troubleshooting, namely checking if there's any wireless interference or alot of other 802.11 networks nearby, and checking your EXACT signal strength (in dBms) where you're sitting at -- see the Wireless Networking forum for some suggestions of software to use.
Some other dumb questions, how far exactly is "two rooms away" in feet / meters? and what's the construction material of the house / walls?

Are you connecting via 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz radio? While 5 GHz can provide a faster connection, it also has much more difficulty passing through walls. |

dBm -66 2.5ghz dBm -84 5.4ghz
The router is about 20 feet away. I bought a Killer 1202 Wifi Adapter a few months ago and the speed is decent, but the latency is about 100+ ms.
There are a few networks nearby. Other houses.
Our house is an older house, 40's I believe, sheet rock over wood walls. |

When I use my Centrino Advanced N6235, the latency is only around 20ms, but the speed is terrible, only 8 to 10mb download. With my Killer N, I get around 40mb download. I get 120mb through my lan cable. |

IIRC, -60 i skinda marginal for 2.4Ghz, I forget what 5Ghz could tolerate. Can you check what numbers you get when you're in the same room as the DPC3939? said by GroundPoundr:Our house is an older house, 40's I believe, sheet rock over wood walls. Okay, so long as the walls weren't metal or brick / stone-heavy. My 00000010bits Regards |
