I'm on the 9000, and when I upgrade it will be to Exede. No help, I know, but it looks better then gen4 to me. |

If your "upgrade" consists of keeping the 9000 modem and going to the 9000 "Gen4 wannabe" Connect or Connect Pro plans, then NO.
If it allows a connection thru a new install of a HT1100 modem aimed at echostar17; then yes. |

I went with Gen4 Feb 2013 from the HNS9000, I think, and couldn't be happier unless they got rid of the latency and download restrictions. That said, I know a lot of people going with Exede, they have no limits after hours. Only thing I wouldn't like about Exede is you have to use some off site email. The hughes email has worked fine for me, not too much junk and easy to change the address. Choice of 10 also. $60/mo with 10GB/mo during the day and 50GB/mo after hours. Your area may vary. The Gen4 has been much more reliable than the old HSN thing, I hardly ever call them any more, it just seems to work, but I also have a friend about 20 miles away that is getting dial up speeds with his Gen4. YPYMYTYC. I'd jump to local WISP in a heartbeat if it were available, no limits and more speed. They keep upgrading so it may be available sometime. |

The whole thing is a matter of location. "Gen4" is available in two flavors: The Spaceway3 "Gen4 wannabe" (HN9000 modem), available for all the lower 48 OR The real Gen4 available only in the Echostar17 foot print. Her is a coverage map. If you are in the blue area you are limited to the slower more limited Spaceway3 "Gen4 wannabe" plans ... forget it ! If you are in the tan areas, then you need to .... upgrade ... if you presently have a 9000 and are in the tan area . have them install the new equipment ... different transmitter, HT1100 modem, all aimed at Echostar17. |

And if you are in the "Gen4 Wannabe" area you are pretty much in the "Exede Wannabe (i.e. Exede 5)" area too. Only upgrade to Gen4 or Exede if on the new birds.
As so the comment about using an offsite email being a drawback with Exede, I have no idea what you are talking about. |

I can't speak to other areas but I CAN speak with authority that ALL the "Exede wannabe" beams along the the US Mexico border, from Tx to Ca, deliver > 10 meg downloads 24/7/365. |

Hughes also outsourses their email to Zimbra. Whenever someone has an issue, that extra "layer" causes confusion and delay. |

Exede's email is outsourced to Google.
I have an Exede email account, but never use it (nor would I recommend using any provider's email domain name). If you switch providers, then what? I use gmail for portability and consistency, but could be using my Exede email account which is the same, except for the domain name of course. |

Even though both sides' email are outsourced, having a .hughes.net or .willdblue.net suffix matters a bit since I still encounter forums which won't accept .gmail.com, .yahoo.com, and .hotmail.com email addresses. |

said by chip89:But Is't it the same since It's Gmail for both? I really don't know what you are referring to in respect to Hughesnet's email domain. It (Hughesnet) has nothing to do with Google/Gmail. The hughes.net domain email "function" used to be "outsourced " by Synacor. In the past few months they have changed from Synacor to Zimbra. It is still a Hughes "domain", its just that the "support" (or lack of) is accessed thru "Hughes" but an added layer is inserted. Its rather like talking about your wife thru your mother-in-law and just about as effective. As to some sites having issues with a "hughes" domain, it likely is due to someone's account/computer being botted, or infected and a place blacklisting by either IP (Hughes IP addresses are "shared" by many users as they are "proxied") or domain. Many Hughes users, sadly fall into the "where is the Any Key" syndrome and refuse to learn or progress beyond that point. The domain name is hughes.net ... the "support" access is thru the 1-800-call-india support number, the "problem" really gets worked out between Hughes and Zimbra. I cant say or care on Excede as THIS forum is dedicated, good, bad or otherwise to Hughesnet. Wildblue/Excede support/details can be found either on their own support website or on the dslr.com sub-forum devoted to Wildblue/Excede. |
