Thanks, that is interesting info. I guess we'll learn more as time goes on.
I should note that G722 is not AMR-WB (G722.2), so somebody has to transcode. It may be an easy transcode and not cause a loss of quality, but at some point the SIP client (as well as Asterisk if that is your platform) should support the current default codec.
I think this is probably one of the most exciting developments in VoIP audio quality. Today, I only know a couple VoIP users I can call using G722 with my VoIP phones.
I am actually wondering if, once Verizon starts sending VoLTE calls over wifi when connected, there is even much point in maintaining my Asterisk PBX at home. It's primary purpose was reliable and good-sounding calls at home. The mobiles may have this nailed shortly. Verizon promises to send voice calls over wifi soon, but not at first release. Video, however, goes over wifi at first release. We can see they care when it comes to preserving bandwidth on their towers.
