I use the free version of Sophos UTM and every few days, it alerts me regarding port scans that have happened. The bad guys never stop trying to get in. |

I'm not sure I understand...my thought on it seems obvious (at least to me). I wouldn't want to have that particular router for some time to only now find out that anyone could see my password, etc. |

I am not sure what a "device structure diagram" is. I am using a desktop PC (that I put together, optimized for low noise). It has an HP "Benicia" motherboard, Q6700 CPU, 8 GB of 800 MHz DDR2 RAM, a 60GB laptop hard drive (less seek noise than a 3.5" drive) and a 2-port Intel Gigabit Ethernet network card. From a few feet away, I cannot hear it at all, so my low-noise goal has been met.
A laptop would also work, but I have never done it.
When you download the Sophos UTM software and burn it to a CD, booting from the CD will guide you through the installation process. Along the way, you will need to answer some questions.
The important thing to note is that you need a good understanding of networking (having heard the word someplace will not be sufficient) in order to configure the security appliance. The free version is very close to the paid one; this is intended to be administered by IT professionals in an enterprise.
There is no factory help available for the free version; there is, however, an excellent instruction manual and an online forum. |

THX & ACK ..... daveinpoway, for the clarification {{{ SMILE }}} Me think so, laptop is not enough input /output for other networking devices .... DESKTOP is more flexible to add another card & port. C U around *_* |

For a laptop, you could use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter (plus the built-in Ethernet port). As an alternative, an Ethernet port can share more than one I/O if you use VLAN and add a managed or "Smart" switch.
Deals are available on used switches from time to time. As an example, I found a Dell PowerConnect 2808 8-port Gigabit "Smart" switch for $5 at a flea market last weekend. If you don't need Gigabit, deals are more plentiful on 10/100 Mbps switches. |

You may find references to this program as Astaro Security Gateway (which was its name before Sophos bought the company). |
