I am looking into purchasing a descrambler but I do not know what type of Box would be compatible with the Cable System here in Garland? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could try calling AT&T and asking what kind of box you would get if you moved there and wanted cable. This is a legitimate question because of home theatre concerns. When I had cable, I called them first to see what kind of box they had because I wanted to hook it up the right way and not have to "rig" something up to work.
With that said, you'll run across so called digital boxes on eBay and on the web. THESE WILL NOT WORK! Someone might try to sell you a digital descrambler. Someone might tell you it is for digital cable. These places can say their descrambers are digital because of all things, they have a digital clock display. Don't waste your money if it is a digital system. I will even say that if you find out that AT&T uses a Motorola DCT 2200, DO NOT BUY ONE! They will probably not allow you to use it.
The bottom line is that unless it is still an analog system these things do not exist. You will only get scammed. |

If you have pay channels on analog cable, than goto yahoo.com and search for cable descrambler . When you buy your descrambler, make sure it is a universal descrambler. The site that you buy it off of will have a disclaimer for legal reasons, that you must notify your cable company . The box will still work if you don't, and most people who buy those type of boxes never notify their cable company. But understand that not notifying your cable company is ILLEGAL |

um @attbi.com | reply to kcharg Sounds like Cable theft to me! |

 | reply to kcharg AT&T is in the process of moving all of their pay channels to the digital side so I wouldn't spend much money on a descrambler. They might not change your area for a year but thy might also change it next month so it would probably be cheaper to just pay them for the channels you want. |

 | I knew someone who did the descrambler thing. They eventually found out he had it and were also able to determine how long he had been getting free cable and made the charges retroactive. He refused to pay. They took him to court. They won. It's your choice though. -- - Fingerprint - |

six9 join:2001-12-03 Atlanta, GA | Oh, another thing. IF you do buy a descrambler, it is usually best to buy from another person. For example, it would be better for you to buy one from me than from Descramblers Unlimited. AT&T could subpeona Descrambers Unlimited's sales list and if you used a credit card or check, they could come after you. But if you bought one from me, your chance of getting caught is less. And as Fingerprint said, if they catch you, they WILL win in court.
If they did get the list from a place you bought from, they can "settle" for several thousand dollars. If you go to court, I believe they can request up to 10 grand. And remember, these things are made for one reason: to steal cable. They will win. You would spend more than the several thousand on attorney's fees and what not if you go to court.
And while these are illegal to own if you do not notify the cable company, they will NOT go after you in criminal court. It is not worth their while. They will take you to civil court where they can get more money. They could care less about prosecuting you. The burden of proof is on you and not them in civil court. (reasonable doubt vs preponderance of the evidence)
note: I do not sell these things, I was just making an example |
