Why does football ( sports ) override normal programming?

Why are sports so special to pop into any time slot on a whim, or run over as much as they want?

I am not sure where to put this. So move if necessary.

Because they are not TV programs and as such, don't run on a fixed programming schedule controlled by the networks. The amount of time they last cannot be predicted so there, they run over as much as needed.

Because they are LIVE events with no predetermined guaranteed end time. And also because they get VERY good ratings and draw big money to the networks thru lucrative advertising deals.

As someone whose job is running a cable company support center I can tell you that stopping a broadcast of a sports game at the scheduled time would make me look for a new job.
As mentioned before Heidi!
Not just money, have you taken a look at the viewing figures of the event and the network show that follows it?

Who is heidi?

I don't much care for the way sports are force fed. Nor would viewing figures matter to me. What matters is when something is scheduled for a certain time stick to it! It is like showing up to a doctors appointment 25 minutes late! How many viewers are lost to running over time?

What matters to you is not important to be honest. What matters to the majority does and you can not pull a live sporting event before its over. I admit we do get a couple of calls when sports go long but nothing like what we would get if the game was just shut off.

It's like being on a sports forum getting drama. FYI: An NFL championship game pulls ~55 million viewers. The highest TV show is "The Big Bang Theory" at ~23 million viewers and NCIS at ~22 million viewers. Everything else averages under 10 million viewers. You can do the math and figure out why sports win without any help now I hope. You can look up "George Armstrong Custer" if you need help understanding.

For the youngsters in the crowd, the "Heidi" game is from the late 60s in which the Raiders were playing the Jets. The Jets were up with about a minute left to play, so the network switched from broadcasting the game so they could start showing the movie, Heidi, at its scheduled start time of 7:00PM. The Raiders scored two touchdowns in the final minute of the game to win, but no one on the East Coast got to see it. Lots of upset football fans.

Since I am in that minority category ( maybe I should start voting democrat ), I or people like me apparently don't matter, is the very reason why we dump pay tv. We are tired of the endless rate hikes caused by over paid sports players.
I would still like to know the loss of viewers when they run quite a bit over the time allotment.

So what would you suggest the cable company does to help you?

Cable companies are just broadcasting the signals being given to them by the network. Its physically impossible to start your show at the correct time. I don't believe anyone is tracking the "loss of Viewers" whatever that means.

I sort of figured this would eventually turn to cost and over paid sports stars, However if you review viewing figures you will see that sports beats out pretty much anything.

Zero. It would be a loss if they broke away from the sporting event. The sporting event has a far higher viewership then anything that proceeds it. By staying with the sporting event they actually increase their viewership.

What program is it that you are so upset about having to watch delayed because of a sporting event?

Players' salaries at best are a very minor portion of rate hikes. If you don't like it, just get rid of cable TV -- the best way to send them a message.

Can you guess how much I paid for cable during the last 15 years? Hint, it's a very round number.

I would still like to know the loss of viewers when they run quite a bit over the time allotment.

FYI, major sports events are one of the biggest drawers of viewers.

Not "one of" they are the single biggest drawer of viewers. There might be a day here and there were the sporting events on TV don't pull as much as the top shows but on average sporting events rank #1.

Again, the 3 of you can spin it all you want. As for the 55 million viewer claim, what about the rest of the population, they could easily out number that. What would you do if the rest of the population spoke up against football?

Oh and lastly, my post was MOVED here, so no drama intended. Or else you'd be complaining no one is posting.

You can argue with FACTS all you want. 55 million viewers is a nelson media fact. There is no other subset of the population that exceeds that with TV viewership period. Again that's a fact. Basically what your asking is: "What if millionaire's (other tv shows affected by sports occasionally) spoke up in outrage over the occasionally interruption from the billionaire's?" Ask the hockey, baseball, or football players (millionaires) how it worked out for them with strikes against their billionaire leagues.

FYI: I added the bold sections to your post so they are correct.

Oh I see, so in other words you are telling me to shut up, and put up with sports interruptions whenever they decide to break in whenever they want. The constant rate hikes caused by sports will eventually chase off more and more people. So good luck with that.

I'm saying you have no idea what your talking about. You have an opinion that's not based on any facts. The average sports fee on a cable bill is $2.00 a month. If that's chasing people off they have bigger issues. The NFL for example gets the bulk of their revenue from DirecTV then recoups it via NFL Sunday Ticket plus extra subscriptions for people who want the NFL Sunday Ticket. The average person isn't paying much for sports. Please do feel free to post some facts with these 'constant rate hikes' or anything else to support your stance. I'd love to be proven wrong.

$2 is the average sports fee a company charges in the normal cable package. Sunday Ticket is an additional service. Those are completely different things. You should be paying $40/month for Sunday Ticket PLUS $2/month for "regional sports". People who hate sports like the OP still pay that $2/month fee which is his gripe.

The current annual income of the NFL is about $10 billion (maybe a bit more by now). Somewhere between 1 and 2 billion comes by way of DirecTV. Also, if someone buys anything that's advertised during a football game (on any network), then a portion of that money also makes its way to the NFL, which is to say almost everyone is paying money to the NFL, whether they watch a game or not.

The NFL stopped being "sport" long ago; it's just business now.

It's always been an entertainment BUSINESS first and foremost. Everything on TV except public access falls into that category as do movies, board games, casinos, billiard halls, video games, etc.
