Rock saltIs there a difference between the 20 lb bag or whatever it weighs that is usually $5 and the small jug of the rock salt that claims it works wonders that is usually the same price, if not a few dollars more? It looks like white pellets versus the rock salt. Am I wasting my money buying the fancier white pellets?
Anyone use anything other than a cup to spread it? How much is actually needed on the ground to prevent ice from forming? Seems I salt the crap out of my driveway and am probably wasting a lot. I blew through half of a jug of that fancy stuff on my driveway in one application (maybe a 10 car driveway). |

"rock salt" = "rock salt"
So with out knowing what you are talking about, no one can tell you... white pellets sound like a combo and not just "rock salt"... (something like prestone HEAT)
I use a snow shovel and my hand... |

Yes, something like Prestone Heat is what I am describing as the white pellets. Maybe more ball shaped. |

Prestone heat is calcium chloride I think. Calcium chloride is less harmful on concrete as far as I know. I've heard rock salt can eat concrete over time. |

I can't tell you how much to use as that is hard to describe and very subjective.
What I can offer is there is a difference between "rock salt" and "Heat".
Due to the chemical difference between the two, calcium chloride will melt ice/snow at a much lower temperature than "rock salt"/sodium chloride.
Lifted from from weathersavy.com: "While rock salt reduces the freezing point to about 15°F, Calcium Chloride will effectively melt ice until -20°F! Magnesium chloride will effectively melt ice to about 5°F (1) . Also, Calcium Chloride is a great deicing agent because it releases heat as it dissolves." |

If you just dump the calcium chloride or salt and expect the ice to just disappear by itself, you're going to use a lot. What you should do is spread either product, give it a little bit of time to work, then use a shovel to remove the ice from the driveway/sidewalk. |

Rock salt like the type used to condition water is primarily larger chunks of salt than a salt made expressly for residential ice melt. The smaller chunks generally work a little faster and perhaps with a more effective result due to more thorough coverage across a specific area vs. rock salt, but the rock salt will work too.
Salt works by lowering the freezing point of water, but salt will not melt ice at under 14 F. Magnesium Chloride will melt ice at -20 F, and Calcium Chloride is good for -62 F. |

I use this: » www.amazon.com/Pellets-C ··· r_sims_tit's very expensive but it has never failed me in any degree weather or ice layer. A little goes a long way also. Don't need to coat the ground like rock salt. One bucket has lasted me three years so far with a little bit left for this year. |

I bought a bag of the cheap stuff and will check tomorrow to see how it did. The expensive pellets seem to do pretty good, and I also use it to get my truck unstuck if it's sitting on ice. |

I went to Walmart yesterday and they had only a 10 lb bag for $2 something. That link shows it available at some other ones in my area. I blew through about 1/3 of the bag I bought yesterday. I even felt I used it more sparingly this time. |

I use a similar product from BJ's Wholesale Club. 50Lb bucket for 19.99 Berkley and Jensen 100% Calcium Chloride Ice Melt. There is a picture of the bucket on this flyer: » www.couponswithoutemail. ··· ys/post/ |

I use water softener salt. Seems the same as rock salt to me but it doesnt seem to agitate my dogs paws as much as regular rock salt. I intentionally use a little bigger size for that purpose. |
