Re: [Equip] Re: RT-N66U router and verizon wireless network extender

I did as passerby suggested and put the ASUS in the AP mode. But it looks to have disappeared...

Re: [Equip] RT-N66U router and verizon wireless network extender

If you put the ASUS into AP mode, move the ethernet cable from the WAN port to one of the LAN ports on the ASUS.

Another question: now that the ASUS is in AP mode, do I plug the network extender into the ASUS router or the gateway ehternet port?

I currently have it in the ASUS LAN port - still SYS light is blinking red...

The extender can be plugged into the ASUS.
What colors are the other lights and are they blinking slow or fast?

I found this note in the manual
Is the GPS LED illuminating blue? If it is not, the Network Extender
might not be receiving a GPS signal. Inability to receive a GPS signal
can result in the Network Extender failing to validate your account
information and network timing, which then prevents usage and
reroutes you back to the nearest compatible cell tower.

Re: [Equip] Re: RT-N66U router and verizon wireless network extender

Should not affect WiFi.
1. Try rebooting Asus.
2.Do you see any link lights on the front for Cat5 connections?
3. Try plugging the cat5 cable from Comcast into one of the LAN ports on the Asus.
4. May have to do a reset on Asus and setup from scratch & Try it the "long way"/manual way

Re: [Equip] RT-N66U router and verizon wireless network extender

Thanks!

Ok. So I did as you suggested. The SSID of the ASUS network pops up and I connected. I logged back into the xfinity gateway and looked at the connected devices. I still do not see the ASUS. How will I be able to log into the ASUS or find it?

SYS light keeps blinking red.

GPS light remains red.

Others are blue.

Re: [Equip] Re: RT-N66U router and verizon wireless network extender

So I did reboots and now I see the ASUS in the gateway. It shows up as DHCP, NA in the RSSI level column. When I click it, I do have the option to configure it for DHCP vs Reserved IP.

Edit - once I click reserved IP, it assigns it as 10.0.0.15

The lack of a GPS signal is the likely hold up. Do you have another window you can try? Preferably one that faces South.

Would the lack of GPS also cause the SYS light to blink red? I thought the GPS would only affect the GPS light.

According to the manual, the lack of GPS would affect the SYS light.

This is from the manual.
My System LED is solid red or blinking red for more than a minute.
%u2013 A red System LED indicates a system error was detected and is
symptomatic of a communication problem with the Verizon Wireless
network.
%u2013 Confirm your Network Extender was activated at time of purchase. If
your Network Extender has not already been activated, call Verizon
Wireless Customer Service at (800) 922-0204 or *611 from your
Verizon Wireless mobile phone and select the option for technical
support.
%u2013 Before contacting the Verizon Wireless Customer Service Center,
confirm the following:
%u2022 Is your WAN LED illuminating blue?
%u2013 If it is not, then there may be a communication problem between your
Network Extender and the router.
%u2013 If the WAN LED is illuminating blue, then check that the router is
communicating properly with your ISP. The Internet activity LED on your
router should be blinking. For further router troubleshooting tips, please
review either the router manufacturer's printed or online documentation.
%u2022 Is the GPS LED illuminating blue? If it is not, the Network Extender
might not be receiving a GPS signal. Inability to receive a GPS signal
can result in the Network Extender failing to validate your account
information and network timing, which then prevents usage and
reroutes you back to the nearest compatible cell tower.

The SYS light will show a fault if there's anything that prevents the network extender from functioning correctly, even if there's an independent status light for that function.

Ah ok.

I have not "registered" this extender either. VZW is closed today. I will have to do this tomorrow. I will try moving the extender around and see what happens.

Does it matter if I plug the extender into the gateway or the ASUS?

Thanks for the clarification.

So, from a router/gateway standpoint, am I all set? I still don't know how to access the ASUS router in AP mode.

I will call VZW tomorrow to register and try to move extender around today to see if that helps.

Use 10.0.0.15 as the login to the ASUS.

You can plug into either the gateway or the ASUS. I have a network extender connected to a Netgear router, in "AP mode of sorts", connected to an ASUS router (in gateway mode) and it works just fine after some early trial and error, similar to what you're experiencing.

I have my network extender, without the optional GPS antenna, about 5 feet away from west-facing window and don't have any issues with GPS lock.

so just play with it and try to get a GPS lock is what you are saying?

I will ask at work if they have a Mini-Coax cable lying around that I can use tomorrow as well.

If you reserved the ASUS IP address it will remain the same.

Yes. It may take up to 30 minutes for the network extender to fully register itself. So, when you put it in a test location, give it about a half-hour to get GPS lock, connect to Verizon's network, etc., before trying a different location.

Tried a few spots in the house - GPS stays solid red and the SYS keeps blinking red.

At work now and as per out IT dept, the extender is registered to our biz account, which also has my cell phone in it. So no need to "register"

Next step is to order an extender antennae
