Re: [Tech] Time to buy a new PC!

I'm curious. Since he's not interested in overclocking, why recommend a CPU cooler?

Now granted it's only $20, but that's $20 he could be spending on Star Citizen.

That actually is a fair point. I can't speak for that particular CPU but the stock cooler for my i5 3570K was totally fine. Granted, I didn't hang onto it, but it does work just fine at stock speeds.

The 212 still makes a difference even if you don't OC.

The amount of noise that it reduced vs the stock fan on my i5 2500k alone is worth the $20, and it helped to drop the overall temps for the system before I even touched the OC setup, which resulted in even less noise overall.

YMMV, I built an Ivy Bridge i5 (non-K) for my stepson and it was unstable with the reference cooler (BSODs and high temps idle and under load) until I put an aftermarket cooler on it.

You can also spend it right now and buy another copy of Titanfall so you could load it up on both PCs and play it at the same time to make it extra hardcore!

Might have just been shitty thermal on the cooler, or did you add paste?

Honestly for the price, the CM212 can't be beat. It's as easy to install as a stock HSF and you're investing the the future of your CPU. Anecdotally speaking my i7 3770 would average 40c under medium load, since adding a CM212 I had sitting around in a box, it hasn't gone over 30c.

If you're going to build you might as well do it right.

It's a type of build, if I'm understanding your question correctly and seeing as most HTPCs are designed to be small, you're going to have to take heat into consideration.

If your wife is cool with it, I would say build a normal sized build and stick it next to your TV, it's easier.

Source: I have an HTPC that's built for gaming performance, and I had trouble cooling it, it was fine after I relocated it, but that defeats the purpose of an HTPC.

Typically, a HTPC is not a great gaming system. I can play games on it but its just not the best for it. It heats up easily and the power supply is small. You need a monster power supply for most of these gaming systems and that is the limitation. I use my HTPC next to my TV and I use Steam In Home Sharing while in the living room. That technology works awesome and I don't need a gaming HTPC for that.

Not generally. HTPC is low power, small form factor, and just good enough to decode video streams.

Unless you are me, then you do something like this:

»pcpartpicker.com/b/hMZ8TW

The SFX PC (Small Form Factor) has come a long way. You can actually get a 600W 80+ Gold SFX PSU from Silverstone. This is plenty to handle most newer GPU, some in SLI. The ultimate limitation is still heat, but even under full load, the computer I listed doesn't go above about 65 C.

You can even get a 970 ITX (small form factor is mini-itx for mobos and GPUs, now).

Not gonna lie, that's a badass setup. A GTX 970 would go great in there with its reduced thermal load.

If you are going to game on an HTPC, you may as well use Steam In Home Streaming. Then you don't have to spend a ton of cash on the HTPC itself. I think I dropped about $600 on my HTPC build, and some of that was for an SSD on the boot drive because I wanted it to boot quickly when I turned it on. I don't like waiting for TV.

I also agree though that I like that build. I don't know how gaming would be on an I3, but it looks solid.

If you are talking about the build I linked, that is an Intel Xeon E3 (server processor). It is comparable to a non-K i7, but much cheaper.

I will probably roll with a traditional set up. I had my PC hooked up to my TV for awhile, but we bought a Roku and that is much more convenient. Now my wife can watch shows and I can game without a wrestling match over the TV.

That reminds me of a joke:

Savious, Krisnatharok and Tirael are having a beer after a long day and th discussion of wives comes up and how each man deals with his wife during an argument.

Krisnatharok: After my wife and I have an argument, she admits I am right and then makes me my favorite meal.

Tirael: Pfft. I just tell my wife what is what and she accepts that. Then she gives me a back rub and we watch my favorite TV show.

Savious: After my wife and I have an argument, she is down on her hands and knees.

Tirael and Krisnatharok are amazed. "What happens after that," Kris ask, aghast.

Savious: She usually yells "GET OUT FROM UNDER THE BED AND FIGHT ME YOU PUSSY!"

"I blew air through my nose" is the preferred comment.

Just an FYI, and I already PMed Kris. I am going to purchase on the 15th. He is busy with RL shit, so if anyone can provide a good update that I can order then, I would be grateful!

Budget is between 1000-1500. I would like to go with an AMD processor and GPU.
