[BC] What do I need to know? Moving from Shaw to Telus after 10-yearsAfter Telus screwed me in 2002 (MMG Network to regular slow 2.5) after 3 years I moved to Shaw.
With my new caretaker they have Shaw+Employee discount.
But today I finally got my caretaker to agree to Telus 100/20 (Shaw 120/6 is useless even at the steep discount).
I have used the Motorola SB5102 stand alone for the past 10 years. since 2009 I have used Airport Extreme as my router.
I hear I need to get a T2200H which offer control of the Telus router? I just want bridge mode (as we have at work).
Give me the full list of things I need to do and don't from when she calls in to order, to when the installer comes etc.
Thanks so much. |

Read that post.
My sister when her building was Telus only and got 25/5 she was told she couldn't use her Airport Express and I didn't know what I was talking about (from the tech who installed it). This was November 2014. |

As I recall, the Shaw employee discount was only for TV services, check the internet 'offerings' carefully, you may find there is no discount at all.
Just be aware of the port-blocks |

Spoke to her son a few minutes it's around $30 for all TV channels and $20 for Broadband 25. |

I just got unbonded 50/10 in November and just disabled the wifi on the modem and ran it right to my Netgear router.
No issues at all or gateway mode needed. |

That's the Shaw employee discount. |

Ok, then they have added an internet discount in the past few years...
It used to be 30 something for TV, and then just the bundle (or no) discount on the internet
Not that it matters |

I am going crazy waiting for my new connection. Ya this Shaw connection is fine, but the modem and router are locked away in her sons room who is never over. so I can't get my Mac Pro on the local network so I can backup my computer and access my iTunes library and update it. |

I read that you were making a changeover and I'm lining up to do the same. Just looking around to get some idea of what kind of feedback people are leaving. I don't want to switch from Shaw (been there for over 10 years with up to 3 different accounts) and am not at all interested for switching garbage for garbage.
I'm coming from the 250/15 plan that I've held onto only because of the upload capacity... and a couple of the telus plans have caught my eye. Interested to read how you make out with your transition! |

all i have to say, if you get bb250, dont get rid of it, you will probably be able to get the new shaw modem thats coming out, you will then jump from 8 channels on the DPC to 16 or maybe even more channels on the new modem, you will probably get full speeds (265/16.5) almost 24/7 at that point, and the latency will be much better than a bonded telus 100 line. aswell you wont have closed/blocked ports |

Funny that you mention that here but I've not heard anything about it during my bellyaching over on their forums lol. |

don't just confirm it, have it installed, done and running good before you even consider canceling that shaw plan... |

Ah yes- same as "don't spend the money until the cheque clears" or "Don't thow out the old bucket until you confirm the new one holds water." Thanks guys- I'm chipping through some fact finding before I make any commitments and I have to admit I'm getting more help online from people outside than I am on the phone from their customer service. It's almost like they don't want to help. |

im serious though, wait untill its installed and its not working, telus is notorious for saying they can book a service (they told me i could get 50 meg single line when i really coudlnt) then sending a tech and realizing they cant actually do what they claimed or thought they could |

Just a word of caution, if you like online gaming, high intensity stuff, fast twitch stuff that requires low latency I'd recommend staying with Shaw. We changed from Shaw to Telus, one reason was it is cheaper and it is, and we were also told that we would have a better Gaming experience with the Optik package because of lower latency, what a load of crap it turned out to be and I'm not talking about ping tests from one point to another which is always fine. With Telus and all of the providers we have to choose from there is no great experience no finesse surely not what their TV commercials promote. The Telus TV channel guide is the most slow, clunky and primitive system, the PVR we have is absolutely terrible, if I purchased this PVR from a shop I would return it pronto because it's crap. The most anyone can say about the new Telus router is it's easier to put into bridge mode to use your own router so you don't have to use their crap, that's pretty sad. Telus does offer more upload capacity, but that's not saying much because we should be getting more than the drop in the bucket we are getting now and Shaw should be ashamed for offering such low upload capacity. Just thought I'd say. |

shaw also has better routing to the west coast IMO but is comparable to the east.
the only real poor routing i have seen on shaw has been to the southern states.. speaking gaming here |

I have had the opposite, Shaw's ping was garbage and during prime time it would get even worst. I switched to Telus several years ago, and I have never had any issues, my ping is low compared to what it was with Shaw. I don't even recall when my Telus service has ever gone down, the services has been reliable and consistent. |

Hey,I'm with Shaw too;do you experience buffering when watching source quality? There are reports of users including me regarding twitch problems on Shaw forum specifically buffering/streaming. |
