Glued to their phones

I know there have been a number of times we've talked about how people are way into technology. This one actually does surprise me though:

Why the surprise. We have raised a new generation that is going to miss a whole lifetime as they are glued to their electronic trinkets every waking moment.

Cell Phone Zombies (CPZ) are a growing and dangerous trend, where folks are so glued to their phones as they walk around that they end up doing stupid things to (usually) themselves and try to weed themselves out of the gene pool (but sadly rarely succeed)

Best example was this morning, I'm on the elevator heading to the basement to get my car, CPZ walks on to elevator, glued to his phone and by the time I'm getting off on my floor, CPZ looks up, realizes that he's traveled all the way to the basement and has to push the button to the floor he's missed while in my head I'm laughing at the CPZ's stupidity.

I'm always impressed that the one's who step off a curb without looking seem to always be around (ie. they haven't weeded themselves out). As a driver I know I'm more vigilant because of them. I'm now in a town with lots of stop signs, but few lights (one of these days I should count them, I think it's three). I'm amazed how often I see people texting / looking down at their phone as they cross the street. I know you can see curbs that way, but you can't see cars.

I know people who get withdrawal symptoms if their phone is taken away. Actually its just as bad as weaning oneself off smoking, drinking, gambling, sex.

Last night I attended a fundraiser for the Guide Dogs. At least 7 people out of the group of 10, at my table, spent their time taking pictures of the food and tweeting it to their friends and then replying to the messages. Not much of a conversation.

While I have observed people engrossed in their phones, I am not sure what is so different about it. Would this be a thread if the guy happened to be reading a book?

There's not an epidemic of people reading books and walking into poles.

That woman who walked into the mall fountain had a criminal record before AND after the incident.

She wasn't good at that either, by most accounts.
