[Networking] Apartment MDU installation with ADSL Modem

Hi guys,

I'm looking for advice about my recent installation of Verizon FiOS to my apartment. The installation equipment involved was a DSL modem( dlink 6300v), Verizon Quantum wireless router and a STB for the TV.

I have noticed there is a significant latency issue with the connection where the first hop is usually 20-30ms. While this does not affect the download/upload speeds too much it is difficult to use any realtime applications like VOIP, remote desktop, etc. I believe this problem is from the ADSL connection due to interleaving. Other theories are the wiring in the building or congestion in the area. (Billerica, MA)

I'm not sure how to access any line statistics for the DSL modem because there is little documentation on this model.

Does anyone have any experience or tips that could help?

Thank you in advance!

The D-Link 6300V is a VDSL2 bridge modem - there is no GUI you can access. And FiOS doesn't use ADSL - it's VDSL1 or VDSL2.

Is it the first hop to the router? If so you might want to look at the ethernet cable or the wireless connection as it is happening before it even reaches the vdsl2 modem.

AS others have said, wireless networking, especially in an apartment setting can have high latency's due to collisions and other traffic management requirements.

Use Ethernet for low latency connection

Apologies about the terminology. I wasn't sure.

Here is a traceroute from a laptop using an Ethernet connection.

Tracing route to verizon.com [184.26.44.96]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.31.1
2 20 ms 19 ms 19 ms L100.BSTNMA-VFTTP-09.verizon-gni.net [96.233.113
.1]
3 22 ms 27 ms 23 ms G101-0-0-14.BSTNMA-LCR-22.verizon-gni.net [100.4
1.209.108]
4 * * * Request timed out.
5 33 ms 33 ms 32 ms 0.ae2.BR2.NYC4.ALTER.NET [140.222.229.93]
6 51 ms 47 ms 46 ms 204.255.168.174
7 34 ms 32 ms 32 ms 63.243.128.10
8 28 ms 32 ms 32 ms a184-26-44-96.deploy.static.akamaitechnologies.c
om [184.26.44.96]

Trace complete.

The connection to the router seems good. It's the hop afterwards which seems pretty long.

Any ideas? Is this normal for a VDSL2 connection? Thanks again guys

What does peering have to do with anything here?

He's complaining about the "first" hop.

And I don't know what the default I'd for Verizon but for A/VDSL 20 ms first hop is not out of the question for a line interleaving turned on.
