Why only in Google fiber territories?

Seems it would make much more sense for AT&T to roll out these services to areas where Google hasn't already expanded.

But if the only game in town for a customer is 45 Mbps or less U-verse, then ATT doesn't have to bother upgrading to retain a customer. That's why competition is so important.

I think AT&T has announced fiber to 15-25 markets but have only built in like 5. Like has been said before its not to compete its to make the other guy(Google Fiber) look worse.

Yes, it's the old Standard Oil strategy, only fight battles where there is competition and use your monopoly everywhere else to try to drive the small competition under.

Their problem is that Google isn't small fry, which is why if AT&T were thinking more than the next earnings report out they'd be working to wire their territory now and have the first mover advantage.

The idea that they're not collecting data like Google would is absurd, AT&T was the first company to become famous for splitting off their data trunk to an NSA room and handing over all of everyone's data whole piece.

They are, even if you opt not to, see the comments at the bottom of this article:

They picked Kansas City to discourage Google from competiting in any of their other territories.

But what if you want your employees to have to upgrade their service behavior to the supposedly exemplary level of GF employees? Putting them in the center of a really competitive environment is one way to accomplish that.

GF is headed to the Atlanta metropolitan area. That is about as AT&T a territory as you will find.
