[WIN7] Hanging on shut down

We have a few PC's running Win 7 Pro, i5, 8GB RAM and SSD's and connected to network drives. However, we're having an issue with them not shutting down at the end of the day. They end up hanging all night and we have to hold the power button down to turn them off and back on in the morning.

Any ideas of what can we causing this, or steps I can take to resolve?

Thanks.

Clear the event viewer and then shut the machine down.
Reboot and then check the event viewer.

I bet you have a usb device or something similar that is not shutting when it should.

Update all of your drivers and if that does not fix it reinstall windows.

OK, I'll check the event viewer and post back.

Reinstalling Windows isn't really an option, so hopefully event viewer will help, or potentially update drivers...

blanking the event viewer first and then shutting down will give you a much smaller list of events to check.

This happens to me on 98se also....... I dont know if its because the DRIVERS arent properly unloading or what..... I could add "AlwaysUnloadDll" and set it to 1 in my registry but I dont even know if thats the reason!! (Sometimes It doesnt do it)

Good luck Black20VT!!

Re: [WIN7] Hanging on shut down

This used to help in the older days when it would hang at shutdown for a long time before actually shutting down:

This was on Win2k and XP though. It may or may not solve your issue...

Hmm I wonder if that would help for me or Black20VT??

Thank you Kerodo

EDIT:

Could it be because of the routing table I have selected??

I only have 'Use MS specification table' selected in IRQ Steering...

Re: [WIN7] Hanging on shut down

In Group Policy, Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System, there is a setting "Verbose vs normal status messages".

According to the description "If you enable this setting, the system displays status messages that reflect each step in the process of starting, shutting down, logging on, or logging off the system."

By enabling this option, it might let you see something that explains where the shutdown is hanging. I never found it particularly helpful, but you might luck out.

Thanks for all the top tips!

Looked into issue and it turns out it was an issue with the Bluetooth driver for the Logitech wireless keyboards and mice. A driver update and problem all sorted!

Thanks all!
