[Internet] 16 Downstream Channels?

I rebooted my modem today in the Tampa Bay market and noticed 16 downstream channels. It used to show 8 downstream. Maybe that 300mb/s is coming soon. Still shows 4 upstream.

If you get the 300 it will come with a new modem unless you have a customer owned 6183.

So is there any benefit of 16 downstream channels for someone without the 300 tier or does it just not utilize the extra channels?

Even 8 channels provide more bandwidth than any tier Bright House currently offers (just over 300mbps, 38mbps per channel)

All users get improved performance with channel bonding because you have a wider pipe overall. Even though you personally cannot fill it up, it's a shared pipe. I assume it's also easier on the cable company to dump more users on fewer, but wider "buckets" instead of having to manage smaller groups of customers on smaller groups of channels.

The additional channels will benefit everyone to some degree.

Since it will benefit all Teirs; Will our Modems be re-booted automactically by BHN, or should I re-boot Manually? I'm in the TampaBay market, looking at my ARRIS 1672...it still shows 8 Channels.

Will the 1672 have to be swapped as well for the 300 tier, or was that only for 6183 owners?

Yes.. if you have a 1670 you will get a different modem for 300.

Seems odd current hardware wouldn't work considering even with 8 downstream channels in theory you could get 304Mbit/s.

Channel configuration Downstream throughput Upstream throughput
Number of downstream channels Number of upstream channels DOCSIS EuroDOCSIS
4 4 171.52 (152) Mbit/s 222.48 (200) Mbit/s 122.88 (108) Mbit/s
8 4 343.04 (304) Mbit/s 444.96 (400) Mbit/s 122.88 (108) Mbit/s
16 4 686.08 (608) Mbit/s 889.92 (800) Mbit/s 122.88 (108) Mbit/s
24 8 1029.12 (912) Mbit/s 1334.88 (1200) Mbit/s 245.76 (216) Mbit/s

True, however shoving 300Mb/s through 8 channels is going to be a bigger strain on the carrier (thus affecting your fellow users), versus spreading them over 16. This provides benefits to the other users on your node.

IIRC, TWC requires users to have 16-channel capable DOCSIS 3.0 modems in order to get their 300Mb/s MAXX service as well.

That leaves little margin and limits the number of customers that can be aggregated into particular pools. By having 16 channels, they can dump larger numbers of customers (including multiple 300-tier customers) into one big group reducing administrative overhead of having to allocate users across channel groups.

We don't build on theory....real world is what counts. I know what the specs say....they don't mean squat when put into a production environment.

I was just about to purchase this new modem/router which is getting good reviews. NETGEAR - AC1750 Dual-Band Wireless-AC Router with DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem. It appears to be able to handle the requirements. Are you saying it won't be supported, at least in the beginning?

Is that the model number? If so, that's not on the BHN approved list for bring your own modem anyway. You have to have something from this list (and it doesn't have 300-tier capable modems on it yet): »support.brighthouse.com/ ··· ce-9109/

The approved list is pending an update. If it isn't on the list it won't be supported for now. Check in a day or two.

Just curious, is the announcement fairly close now and will this be a seperate tier? I have RoadRunner Lightning 150mbps and I'm assuming that I won't get the bump to 300. So I'm guessing this will be a higher tier for a price to get 300, correct?

Wow, seems like I got lucky just picking up a SB6183 as my first customer owned modem (thanks Gary for the heads up in another thread). Now I just wonder how long Orlando will have to wait after Tampa officially gets it's 300Mbps service. Great to see this new tier come along even though I just upgraded to Lightning 150

Gary has said in the past that it will be a separate, new tier. Not an upgrade of Lightning 150.
