There's a global war for internet freedom. And the U.S. is losing. quote: Simply put, we are in danger of "losing" the internet to a hostile vision of security and control. The problem goes way beyond our comparatively petty squabbles over matters like Hillary Clinton's email scandal, the scope of so-called Net Neutrality, or even the omnivorous omnipotence of the NSA. Even at our alleged worst, even when some of us flout the Constitution in creepy or bloody ways, we are not fighting against freedom, a point often lost in the shuffle of political accusations and recriminations.

The core of it all is that humans who attain power are drawn to try to control those over whom they exercise power. The more tyrannical the setting, the more bluntly, blatantly, and universally that control is exercised. The Internet is merely one more avenue for expressions of freedom... hence it is simply one more target for stifling its free use in order to control. The more tyrannical the regime, the more bluntly, blatantly, and universally will those in power attempt to control free expression and paths of access on the Internet. -- The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money. -- A. de Tocqueville |

How is this news? It started with the advent of Web2 which was carefully planned and the masses ate it up because they can't see beyond their noses. As Dude111 says it's exactly what the masses want in THIS country but the author seems blind to the obvious. WE killed the internet...not other nations because the masses wanted it killed. The masses are no longer capable in this nation of living a life of freedom, liberty and privacy. So, I say that author should have directed his comments at the USA rather than getting upset with events in other so called democratic nations.. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

So, what exactly should we, the American people and American government, do about Pakistan shutting off cell service for people who don't provide a fingerprint or India making crazy laws about online postings? quote: Americans complain about their tech titans, whose proudly flaunted wealth seems so unfairly unearned. The reality is, they are becoming the only people who can save us from an internet worse than no internet at all.
And what exactly should Comcast do? Can this whole article be boiled down to "give money to certain foreign political parties"? -- Rise from your grave, Opera -- »vivaldi.com |

Indeed, what should the American people and government do about any foreign leader's expression of tyranny against their own or other people? George Washington espoused staying out of their business ("make no entangling foreign alliances"); Woodrow Wilson espoused major intervention ("making the world safe for democracy"). Isolationism vs. interventionism... "fortress America" vs. "world policeman". Somehow, I don't believe this inherent tension of choices will be resolved in our lifetimes... and "Internet Freedom" seems just one more arena where it plays out. -- The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money. -- A. de Tocqueville |

said by Blackbird:The core of it all is that humans who attain power are drawn to try to control those over whom they exercise power. That is exactly the reason behind the recent moves with Internet. The major problem is "We The People" allow it... BTW, it was mentioned in the article itself: But with an all-too-American combination of arrogance and innocence, we just refuse to take seriously the concerted efforts of a rainbow coalition of despots to tyrannize the internet. Precisely. We don't want to see it, we don't want to do anything about it... You know, the only thing a sheep wants to see is a rear end of the other sheep in front of it... Nothing else matters. Anyway it's good, that time to time someone is able to wake up and show the rest of us what's going on with our herd... -- Keep it simple, it'll become complex by itself... |

I don't see the internet as a human right (though a utility it may be). I wouldn't rank the censoring the internet or even cutting it off entirely up there with the deprivation of life, liberty, or property without due process though. Putting up firewalls is just not something I see as worthy of interventionism. Putting up firing squads, on the other hand.. Not to say I wouldn't like for us to be able to right the wrongs of despots. In an idyllic fantasy world we could topple dictators left and right creating stable, free democracies in our wake. Unfortunately history has shown that doesn't work out so well. One country's internet is not worth that amount of blood and treasure. -- Rise from your grave, Opera -- »vivaldi.com |
