[Networking] FiOS Download Speed slowdown, started 3/27

I've been experiencing a slowdown of my download speed on my 50/50 FiOS connection, but the upload is fine. I usually get 50-60Mbps down and 60-65Mbps up, but recently I've only been getting between 8-20Mbps measured both with various speedtest sites as well as with downloads.

I've called FiOS support and they couldn't find any issues on their end, and I've power cycled my router several times and the ONT once. I've also released my IP, turned off my router over night, turned it on in the morning with a new IP. I'm still having issues.

I'm in PA near Philly, is anyone else having issues like this?

I'm a computer engineer by day so if there is any more information anyone might need, let me know and I'll be able to get it.

Thanks

What speed test result using VZ's speedtest? I'm having good results with the new DSLR test, as good as VZ test.

As far as your traceroute goes, hop 8 and beyond is google's. Variance from hop to hop can be attributed to unknown (possibly multiple) return paths. Fact that 9 and 11 are consistent with 6 and 7, and that the outliers 8, 10, 12 and 13 are on google's network says they are having the problem.

Verizon's speedtest gives a very similar result to speedtest.net's (which doesn't surprise me since both are powered by ookla). I merely provided the traceroute to google since someone was going to ask for one anyways.

I'm getting back download speeds everywhere, including using a vpn.

Just tried three speedtest sites:

»www.speedtest.net/my-res ··· 50401541
»[Fiber Speed test: 57.20/61.94 18 ms]

And Verizon's, which agrees with both the DSLR and speedtest.net numbers.

I'm at 50/50 and located just outside Phila.

I have had latency issues with fios lately. Streaming hiccups from 8 Pm to 12 Am on any type of streaming service. I don't think there is adequate backend capacity. I really feel like there is not enough backend capacity/fixing up going on.

Ok, so its probably not a regional issue. I'm just really confused why it would be almost perfect service at this location for 11 months straight, then an issue with only download, not upload that they don't seem to be able to see on their end?

Also I've done speedtests at various times of the day, even 3 am, still about 12Mbps.

I googled "pool-96-236-104-66.burl.east.verizon.net" and found it was implicated in download speed issues. People commonly performed traceroute to google.com

Might be useful to get traceroutes from specific sites you are actually having trouble with downloads. Also, show test results from here: »my.verizon.com/services/ ··· eedtest/

Verizon speed test:
12.47Mbps down
63.94Mbps up.

Example download: Ubuntu 14.04 iso
from:
»www.ubuntu.com/download/ ··· re=amd64

Download speed:
300 KBps == 2.4Mbps

Actual download from:
ubuntu.mirrors.pair.com

Traceroute to ubuntu.mirrors.pair.com:
Tracing route to ubuntu.mirrors.pair.com [216.92.2.144]
over a maximum of 64 hops:

1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms FiOS_Router.home [192.168.69.1]
2 5 ms 7 ms 6 ms L100.PHLAPA-VFTTP-72.verizon-gni.net [71.175.110.1]
3 9 ms 11 ms 11 ms G0-13-2-7.PHLAPA-LCR-22.verizon-gni.net [130.81.212.150]
4 6 ms 9 ms 8 ms ae10-0.PHIL-BB-RTR2.verizon-gni.net [130.81.163.140]
5 14 ms 13 ms 12 ms 0.xe-3-0-2.XL4.IAD8.ALTER.NET [152.63.3.57]
6 14 ms 12 ms 12 ms 0.xe-11-3-0.GW10.IAD8.ALTER.NET [152.63.35.237]
7 31 ms 24 ms 23 ms pair-gw.customer.alter.net [152.179.50.138]
8 * * * Request timed out.
9 * 22 ms 22 ms ubuntu.mirrors.pair.com [216.92.2.144]

Downloading the 14.04 iso from an official torrent (in the past this has used close to 100% of my download speed):
Peaked at 6MBps (48Mbps)

Which is about what I should be getting. So it looks like on individual connections I'm being throttled but I can get up to my normal network speed with a distributed download coming from multiple sources.

So I'll repeat what I said over in that other endless topic: »Re: FIOS 7pm-11pm over saturation 75/75 turns to 5/75

If you keep your performance testing on the Verizon network and you're not getting the results that you should, you can complain and eventually it will get resolved. It has been acknowledged, though not in any public statement, that the Verizon network is in need of upgrades which are underway. Gateway routers are being changed and/or supplemented in high density areas. The work is projected complete sometime in Q2.

I am only a FiOS subscriber and repeating what has been posted in these forums while looking at FiOS network history since 2006 when I signed up. I don't work for them.
