Comcast Released New Tiers and True Gig [April Fools 2015]I was looking on Comcast's site and I noticed this article. Just to make sure it wasn't fake, I went to the Comcast's offer page and found this whole list of offers for my address. I took a picture of everything in case they decide to take it down. Here's the link to the article: » corporate.comcast.com/co ··· industry |

Other than the obvious gigabit joke, those other tiers seem to be priced about right...considering the overall costs of delivering data has plummeted. |

Comcast, offering lower prices and a $99 Gig (symmetrical, which means FTTH) tier???
When Brian Roberts manages to purchase the moon....
I wish the pricing listed there was the real pricing for the DOCSIS tiers though. If I was the magic tier wizard at Comcast this is how I would structure it (all prices are fixed and do not randomly go up 1/2 of the way though the contract:
Utilitarian - 5/1, $19.99 no contract (Too fast for the Slowskis, remember those turtles???) Basic - 15mbps/2mbps at $29.95 Performance - 25mbps/5mbps at $45 Performance+ - 50/10 at $65 Blast - 105/10 at $75 Extreme (DOCSIS) - 150/15 at $125 ComcasticExtremeBlastPerformancewow - 300/300 on fiber, god high price ComcasticExtremeGigasphereBlastPerformance+wowx1finity - Gigabit, dont ask about pricing
(hey, I have to keep this list SOMEWHAT realistic, there must be at least 2 insanely expensive tiers) |

How about: Utilitarian - 5Mbps/1Mbps at $19.99/mo [$9.99/mo for qualified, low-income customers (i.e., "Internet Essentials" program)] Basic - 10/2 at $30/mo Performance - 25/5 at $45/mo (satisfies the FCC's current "broadband" definition) Blast! - 105/10 at $65 [8x4 or higher D3 device recommended] Extreme (DOCSIS 3.0) - 305/25 at $100/mo [16x4 or higher D3 device required, 24x8 recommended] Supreme (DOCSIS 3.1) - 500/100 at $150/mo (limited availablity) True Gig* (FTTH) - 1Gbps/1Gbps at $300/mo [$70/mo in Google Fiber and AT&T GigaPower areas] (current availablity extremely limited) * - Trademark of Darknessfall Comcast You also didn't touch on what the monthly "Data Allowance" would be for each tier - or do we just assume it would be "unlimited."? |

I like to think that Comcast wont go and start slapping data allowances all throughout their service areas and that this limited trial will come to pass. The 250gb old "cap" was so lax enforced it did not even matter.
Unfortunately my fear will probably be confirmed, and Comcast will discover the huge profits of data caps...

Is nobody giving D3.1 any hope for gig interwebs? |

D3.1 probably wont be used for gigabit right away, but it can do gigabit service, Cablelabs made a new trademark for gigabit cable service - "Gigasphere".
D3.1's greatest advantage is vastly improved efficiency and capacity even with existing channel layout. With some retrofit on the downstream and upstream we will see even more performance squeezed out of the HFC plant.
The ILEC's must be scared...there is no way for them to match these upgrades with twisted pair copper. Already D3 outclassed them, D3.1 is a death knell - fiber or nothing for them now... |

For the 305/25 package, I agree on the need of a 16x4 device, but where would one find a 24x8 device in this day and age? I can't even think of a market that even offers that many channels. Is this a subliminal hint that that's gonna change? |
