| | But,..what if your got DSL avaliable, and the....
..... choices suck ??
Here's my situation: I've been on-line for 17 years. I've endured the progression from 300 baud to current broadband speeds, lost E-mail, dropped connections, large downloads that fail when their 98% complete, inability to get on-line when I want, slow connections to the backbone, a bitchy wife when she encounters ISP related problems, etc., etc, etc.
I've had my current provider for over 6 years now and their service has been close to flawless. My Web site has never been down (to my knowledge). I've RARELY not been able to log on when I want, anytime day or night. I consistently get 50k connects. In a nutshell, I rarely even give my ISP a thought, because I don't have to.
The choice of Broadband in my area is either Adelphia or Verizon (or one of it's "partners").
I've had ongoing Cable TV problems and have finally given up complaining to Adelphia about their local infrastructure problems.
Verizon services my area through a combination of copper and fiber. There also seems to be some kind of line concentrator involved. So, you can guess what they told me when I inquired about DSL. They still want me to "sign up" however, even though they tell me not to expect anywhere near the advertised speed.
Anyways, sure, I could get DSL. However, neither company has a history of "service" that would make me want to give up my trusty 56k.

A) Launch your own ISP. B) Pay for premium accounts

That's how it works. If there is profit, they will come. You see some profit lying around? Incorporate and carpe diem, man!
Remember, the cable & phone company have never been known for competence...why would they suddenly know their *** from a hole in the ground on broadband?
P.S. Wildcat, Spitfire, MTABBS, Fido props to the 300 baud dude.....I started @110
| | | | | Verizon BS. Verzion is BSing everybody. Their claim about 19K feet from the CO and it must be copper is out and out BS. I am a retired Verizon optical engineer and have worked for other fiber optic manufactures. You CAN get DSL over fiber optic media using the latest technologies. www.zhone.com (which I did not work for) offers DSL over voice WITHOUT DSLAMs. The line card will extract the data over voice and send to to an ISP ATM switch. You have fiber from the CO to a node in the outside plant, many miles away and then convert to copper for the last hop. Go to the to zhone site and look for yourself. Verizon has negleted to intergrate this technology because their outdated copper mentallity operating systems won't handle fiber to the home technology. Their stoggidy old outside plant engineering people and methods don't and won't change with the time. If it ain't copper to the home...they are at a loss...and it is a threat to their job security. I have personally seen them trying to modify an electronic line card to "look" like a cable pair. These people are the dumbies who are left from the "downsizing" of Verizons workforce. Am I a disgruntalled employee...not in the least. I retired from Verizon in good standing, have again retired and living well...this is NOT sour grapes...it's why Verzion can't give you DSL... and cable modems are going to clean their clock, if they don't get on the stick.

| Re: Verizon BS. I worked for C&P down in MD back in the 60's. Left after the '67 strike when I got stuck at Top Pay (166.50 then) and couldn't get into ESS because I was one of the few left who knew #1 crossbar.
Anyways, I was always told that Fiber = Speed. Sure surprised me when Verizon told me I'd have problems with speed BECAUSE of the fiber!
While speaking of fiber, Adelphia added fiber cable in my area about 3 years ago. I can now get hundreds of channels if I want, but our reception has been fouled up since the fiber was added.
Dozens of my neighbors have similar problems (I've talked to many), but I'm told no one else in my neighborhood has complained. So, I asked several and sure enough TV reception and Internet access are not biggies on their lists. Rather frustrating since both Verizon and Adelphia have told me basically "if other households aren't complaining, then there isn't a problem".

| I never said it would be easy, but I did provide the winning answer But the big point is...I know what you mean I do live in canada, and if it's one thing canada is good at, it's a lack of compitition. Broadband wise you have, Rogers, Shaw, Bell(Sympatico), dsl.ca. Or, local ISP useing Bell's lines and equpiment(basicly a var), otherwise you have dial up...and with some of the major ISP here like AT&T, and couple of others...sorry I've forgotten the names, they don't want anything to do with broadband or the "We have no plans to ever offer broadband". Sometimes I'm quite sure people aim to go out of business here.
And much like you, I started at 110 baud as well, I had net access via a BBS for awhile, before the net caught on and before that I paid $139/mo for net access back in the 80's plus LD charges.
