Re: Tips to Make Your House a Holiday Hotspot

LMAO:

"Put Your Router Front and Center

Most activity will probably take place in your living room and kitchen, as family and friends gather to watch football (while checking Fantasy scores), open presents (while posting on Instagram), cook dinner (while looking at Pinterest recipes), and so on. Make sure your router (aka Wireless Gateway) is somewhere centered in this general vicinity, about 5 feet off the ground. This way, the wireless signal will reach the most-used areas. (Check out this blog for more tips on where to put your Wireless Gateway.)"

Sure, let me rewire my house to accommodate moving the modem & router.

Or tell the "MUST STAY CONNECTED" group to stay home/phone in a virtual appearance if they can spare the time.
You save on punch and snacks, as well as have more time for guests that actually want to be there.
surely there must be more to the holiday spirit then "Free Wi-Fi"

"open presents (while posting on Instagram)"
'Cringe' Please no...

"tell your visitors to set their devices to 5 GHz in the Wi-Fi Settings menu."
Yeah, like most phones/tablets let you disable bands(varies). Not like your whole family is going to bring their laptops over and even then, their wireless adapter might not support disabling bands. It doesn't even mention what gateways have 5 GHz(some people probably wouldn't even have a clue).

"Then, you can use your personal Wi-Fi signal for things like online holiday shopping, to catch a good deal or buy another strand of lights."
I don't know about you, but who goes shopping online while your family/friends are over for the holidays?

Or ditch CC's crappy-ass WG & get your own good wireless router (& modem) & you'll probably have no issues w/signal reach!

Yeah, I love how they assume we all have gateways. My router is in the basement and has no problem reaching the 5GHz band outside.

It's probably a bit more than an assumption. It is a way to get all customers prepared for the day when Comcast eventually follows AT&T's lead and forces every customer to use a rented wireless gateway.

Yes, a Comcast-owned wireless gateway that can become an Xfinity Neighborhood Home Hotspot for them.

Don't forget, "Streaming can eat up your mobile data fast."....it can also eat up your Data Cap too, if you are in one of those markets

Yeah, I love how they assume we all have gateways.

To be fair, a lot of customers likely are renting a gateway.

On my inSSIDer, I only see 3 standalone routers. On the other hand, I see 41 Comcast/Frontier gateways. So, at the very most only 6.8% of people aren't using a gateway in my neighborhood. Can be even less if they have a gateway, if they never turned off their gateway's wireless network when putting up their router. There used to be a few 1x1 N and G routers up, but a lot of them were wiped out when Comcast did their D2 modem upgrade run.

Or tell the ENTIRE group to stay home......and relax without having to get stressed out spending time/money on people you may not necessarily like, and catch up on some TV or Netflix with a day off work. Whatever money is saved can be put towards you're ever increasing bill.

Wouldn't it just be easier to enable the guest mode on stand alone routers? They're making it sound so much more complicated then it needs to be

I think we all have been in the situation where we try to use the internet at a relative's house and wind up reconfiguring their entire network.

For me, the knowing/giving permission usually applies to turning off 120 Hz frame interpolation on their TVs.

Re: [Connectivity] Tips to Make Your House a Holiday Hotspot

By the holidays, I should finally have my Ruckus R700 AP mounted on the ceiling in the center of the house; the modem, router, switch, UPS, etc. will stay in the basement out of sight and out of earshot. Beyond that, everyone's on their own, although the AP will try to force people onto 5 GHz automatically if their devices support it.

Perhaps he means it gives off wireless interference?

120/240Hz TVs have never been a problem for me, or at least I havent noticed it...

Ah, ok. I've tried to find balance between full on 120Hz smoothing and half on 120Hz smoothing. I found sometimes it can cause weird artifacts or tearing in horizontal movement.

Set up equipment per above - check.
Double-check usage (if in capped area) - check.
Anticipate movie downloads and wifi sharing - check.

Encounter 1 or more inexplicable Comcast outages .... PRICELESS.

While we are at it, why not just replace the Christmas Tree with an Xfinity XB3 gateway?
It has blinking lights. Looks more like a depressing black box, but dont mind it its Comcastic!

I am suprised CC did not ask us to rent some PPV movies during the holidays, because renting holiday classics from your cable provider says holiday cheer.

Hey, why not place one of these hollow, ceramic Christmas trees over an XB2/XB3 gateway?

I think the gateway's indicator lights may be bright enough to make those little plastic bulbs glow.

Re: [Connectivity] Tips to Make Your House a Holiday Hotspot

if you are on data caps then im shutting off my wifi, or unplugging it.

When in Doubt, Restart

If the Internet starts to get sluggish, reset your Wireless Gateway, and let it readjust. This will reestablish the network in your house and may solve the issue.

well theres your issue if your internet is sluggish, dump the gateway and buy a real cable modem, and a real wired router, and a real access point to avoid slow downs.
