 | reply to Linksys Tech2 Anyone who has tried this, does it allow MSN Messenger file sharing/voice/video to work? That is the only compelling reason for me to try this...
Please, report back results! Thanks. |

 | reply to Linksys Tech2 Has anyone besides Dude? received a copy of the new beta firmware? I sent in my request a couple of hours after the original post, but haven't heard anything. Just curious since I got no response at all the last time I tried to get beta firmware. |

| No, but they're running at least three betas right now and I'm sure they're swamped. In the past, only five or so requesters got it. I don't know if Linksys made the selections for prior betas based on any criteria other than order of request. In the past, they have indicated that they wanted users that wouldn't need a ton of hand-holding (makes sense). -- Surf Without Strings |

 | reply to Dave Young Windows 2000 does not UPnP support and Microsoft has zero intention of adding UPnP to it.
If you want UPnP support in your OS, you will need to (at this time) choose Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, or Windows XP, and either enable the native UPnP support within the OS, or add support via the "netsetup.exe" program provided on the Windows XP CD or from a Windows XP install.

 | reply to Linksys Tech2 I installed the beta on Friday. So far, so good.
Things that I have noticed:
** Huge improvements ** Hiding the SSID from Beacon packets Overall WEB interface has been cleaned up Not having to reboot for every little change DHCP options (ATT's DNSs suck, so I use another ISPs)
** Improvements ** My performance is generally better everywhere. I wouldn't classify it as night and day, but it's definately better. Router hasn't needed to be reset (I usually had problems with Yahoo messenger bouncing up and down that forced me to reset)
** Issues ** Documentation. The wireless tab has been there for awhile and has yet to be fully documented by Linksys. Also, none of the new features are documented at all.
** Questions ** I have XP and XP sees the router as a UPNP device, but how do I know XP is communicating UPNP? Is there a diag or something? I know messenger uses it, but how do I KNOW messenger is really using it? (I'll have to check another topic 'eh?)
I'll have more feedback in the coming week. |

Can you mail me the firmware at mike@@@mpscan.com (only use one @) so I can put it up on my public FTP site for everyone who wants it?
Thanks, |

lcoppenr How did you determine that XP sees the router as a UPnP device? |

evanscWardriverPremium join:2001-03-20 Cape Coral, FL | I believe There are two things that have to be set before you will see the router in your Network Places: 1. Services 2. Add / Remove Windows Components Then you will be able to see it in you Network Places. -- Evans C, MCP [ AIM IM | Yahoo! | reply to theos2 The BEFW11S4 is in my Network Places. That's about the ONLY reason I know that XP sees it. MSN messenger says NOTHING about it. When I double click on the icon it just opens the admin index page on the router. |

Ok, thanks. I get the same exact thing. If you want we can try to send a file through messenger, and that way we can test it. i know for sure it didn't work before. PM me if you want to try it. |

Re: Beta Firmware BEFW11S4v1 Can anyone explain the benefits of... or why anyone would want the UPnP feature? I thought not too long ago this was exposed as an unnecessary compromise of security (port500?) and the recommendation was to shut it down. |
