Good results running 2 VPN's simultaneously

Running CheckPoint SecureRemote to one office network while running SonicWall VPN client to another office network. Some minor confusion as settings not retained on upgrade. Had minor difficulties setting up WEP due to overexcitement.

2 questions

1) What is the purpose of the option to "Allow "Broadcast" SSID to associate". I understand that sniffing packets can yield the SSID for a WAP but isn't it required for legit devices to attach.

2) What is the "Station MAC Filter" options under the Wireless tab? I know we've been complaining about the implementation of MAC security (filter out instead of authorizing specific MAC's). This looks like the same old thing with the addition of an active MAC table (nice but doesn't help secure router unless I see someone logged in). Am I wrong?

Using Network Services under Admin tools got the UPnP going but didn't have to load additional Networking Services. Going to network connections I see Internet Gateway as well as local area network. Right clicking Properties for internet gateway and then setting button yields a butt load of services which need to have check boxes checked. I don't know specifically which ones I need so I checked them all. Any advice or additional info would be appreciated.

To answer your questions...

1) I guess not. I have broadcast disabled and I connect fine.

2) See the posts in this thread regarding MAC filtering. It works the way we'd all want it to, though the "user experience" of configuring it leaves a bit to be desired. Here's one post on this thread explaining how to properly set it up:

Re: The Station MAC Address Filter page. Looks like you can use this to specify either MAC addresses to *allow* or to *exclude*. First you must enable Station MAC Filtering (checkbox on Wireless page). Then in the list page, enter the MAC addresses you want to *allow*, with no "-"'s, and *DO NOT* check "Filter"-- as "Filter" will *exclude* the address as opposed to allowing it.

Re: Beta Firmware BEFW11S4v1

I'd love to move off 1.40.3 and up to 1.42.7. I can't say I've run into problems with my current firmware but I want to get going with UPnP on these units. I'm running version 1. You can reach me at linksys@davebach.com. Thanks for all your help and look forward to your reply.

MAC Reverse Filter seems to work

I've enabled the MAC filtering with my WPC11 setup in the filter setup without "Filter" checked. The signal goes dark for a few seconds when enabling then comes back fine. Has anyone with two wireless cards tried to get onto their network with one configured as "Non-Filtered" and the other one unconfigured in the MAC table. I'd like to see someone simulate War Driving with a "rogue" wireless NIC card.

Re: Beta Firmware BEFW11S4v1

I received the beta firmware today and have results for two PC cards.

1. Orinoco Gold Card. Works perfect as far as I can tell. Tried 64 and 128 bit encryption. With and without MAC filter. MAC filter (in allow mode) performed as expected. "Allow Broadcasttt..." is set to NO and performed as expected. NetStumbler did not detect my WAP, which is good. I hot-swapped my PC card several times and everytime it came back online without problems.

2. 3-Com XJack. I could not get my WAP to work with this card. Tried the same settings as the Orinoco. Nothing seemed to work, even after stripping out all the security. I could establish a what 3-com calls a "ad-hoc" association in 40bit, but still could not access my network for any browsing or pinging whatsoever. Not sure what to do from this point.

Lost WLAN entirely after flash

This has been a common issue for weeks now on my BEFW11S4. As soon as I flashed 1.42.7 (v1), I lost the WLANLink light. No amount of fiddling with settings, resets, factory resets, power cycles, etc brings it back. This also occurs with 1.40.3. and 1.39.2. When I flash 1.37.9b, the WLAN lamp comes back on and I'm in business.

Think it's time to get a RMA on this thing?

I find it EXTREMELY odd that 1.37.9b is the only version of firmware that will allow WLAN operation.

Re: Beta Firmware BEFW11S4v1

I had that same problem... tho the weird thing is after leaving it to 137.9b for 2 weeks and going to 139.2 ... it worked again... i got the thing exchanged anyways so..

But to answer DSL_junkie's question... yes i tried it with 2 laptops... one orinoco wireless nic and a proxim ds rangelan nic... when i checked the filter to block my orinoco wireless nic... i lose the connection... but my proxim is still connected.. netstumbler doesn't see it etc.etc. the card is pretty much blacklisted from the access point.. so pretty much a good thing to do if you see foreign mac address always in your listing that could be your neighbour hehe.

Having the same problem with my 3COM X-Jack. It appears that the 3COM can't access the access point if SID is not broadcast (probably a 3COM problem - their WLAN tools are a bit too 'consumer orientated' for my taste).

Dave in his post at »Beta Firmware BEFW11S4v1 modified the filter and set it to a MAC that was different then his and he couldn't connect to the router, so I'd guess it works. The post is at »Beta Firmware BEFW11S4v1

upgrade or not?

Any idea how long it'll be for this firmware to go from beta to final? It seems like this firmware has very few problems to fix.

Re: Beta Firmware BEFW11S4v1

Also noticed this strangeness...

I have two Linksys routers on my LAN... My BEFSR41 is in gateway mode. My BEFW11S4 is in 'router' mode. Enabling uPnP services on both routers (which in real life shouldnt be necessary since the BEFSR41 in Gateway mode is taking care of all the port forwarding, etc), causes the 'Internet Gateway' icon in XP to appear and disappear every 6 or 7 seconds or so -- consistently.. On.. Off...On...Off.. Doesnt seem to affect network performance, but didnt run any actual benchmarks.

I realize this is not a very common setup, but I disabled uPnP on the Wireless to keep it from happening.

I guess since both router are from Linksys. It is very likely they use the same exact GUID or something like that to present itself to Windows. And Windows is not designed to handle this (two UPnP device with same ID). And there is really no value for the wireless one to use UPnP because it is not going to do anything.

To follow up to my initial post, and clarify some incorrect assumptions now that I've had a little more time to play:

Using the "No" setting on broadcast associate, and with "any" in the SSID setting on the Orinoco, Netstumbler does not see the AP. (I had the real SSID in the Ori utility profile before).

The Wireless MAC filter works well, and seems simple now that I know how it works. I still maintain that it's not intuitive and could be better labeled.

With either the WPC11 or the Proxim card, and with the router set to 128 bit encryption, I can connect to the S4 after disabling WEP at the client until a client reboot.

I cannot get the "Edit MAC Filter Setting" button to work on the Filters page. I wanted to try filtering all but the known MAC addresses on the LAN. Reloaded the BIN that I received directly from Linksystech2, hard reset twice, same thing. Has anyone else used this button successfully?

You need to go back to the first page and read the Linksys Tech2's invitation post.
All you have to do is click on his name and send him an email here = »/useremail/u/371269
That's the way he/she has requested contact for the beta firmware.
Good luck.:)

netlinker2,
Did you EVER get the 3com Xjack to work right? I tried setting the SSID Broadcast to YES and still could not get it to work. I borrowed my coworkers Xjack to see if his does the same thing. I will report the results.

No_Strings -- Filters page Edit MAC Filter button

I can bring up the MAC filter dialog by pressing the associated button on the Filters page. I haven't tried to mind you..

Re: No_Strings -- Filters page Edit MAC Filter button

I got it to work - it was ZA Pro. Never saw that kind of thing before. I set the ad blocking to off and I can see the MAC filters. It's an "allow all" though, right? Or am I still not seeing something? ZAP also started blocking my DSLR login cookie, which it never did before. Like I need something else to troubleshoot today!

So: No functional issues so far on this code, my dysfunction not withstanding. Will try the UPnP stuff soon. If anyone knows how to use the LAN MAC filter to allow only known addresses, please let me know.

Sorry for the tail-chasing.
