the 6183 is because a friend of mine got the service but since that wireless modem combo they gave him (the Hitron one) had H O R R I B L E Wi-fi signal penetration, I advised him on just going separate so he picked the modem lol

6183 works as it was my modem before the CM600, just has compatibility issues with EERO Wifi Mesh systems. So be careful if you plan or have that. »support.eero.com/hc/en-u ··· network-

I have the CM600 on Suddenlink now, and it works great.

I'm in Abilene, TX

They use a generic configuration file. They can't use generic firmware since the firmware is specific to each modem. They just don't update the firmware at all and make up reasons not to like needing to test firmware or liability. Their residential services agreement clearly allows them to update the firmware with no liability while also restricting customers to arbitration so there is zero actual liability.
37. Upgrades. ...Whether the cable modem is owned by Customer or Suddenlink, Suddenlink shall have the unrestricted right, but not the obligation, to upgrade the firmware in the cable modem at any time that Suddenlink, in its sole discretion, determines it is necessary or desirable. Customer assumes all responsibility for any degradation in or problems from the failure to upgrade. Suddenlink does not represent, warrant or covenant that installation and modifications of peripheral devices, including Network cards, computer equipment, software, computer files and other system configuration files necessary to operate the High Speed Internet Service will not disrupt or delay the normal operations of Customer's computer device(s) or associated equipment. Suddenlink shall have no liability whatsoever for any loss, damage or outage resulting from the above...
»www.suddenlink.com/resid ··· greement
I've used modems updated on other ISPs to the most recent firmware with no issue whatsoever. They also claim to support any 3.0 modem so needing to test firmware for each modem doesn't make sense with that claim. The 3.1 modems apparently require CMTS updates so with no money being spent, they likely won't be supported. Contact Suddenlink and contract your franchise holder or file an FCC complaint when they fail to act on updating firmware which would resolve that SB6183 issue along with numerous security issues and for their failure to support the 3.0 compatible 3.1 modems.

For the modem list, you can add the SB8200 to incompatible since I tried it in July 2017 in New Bern, NC, and several others reported it not working in March, April, and May prior to my go at it:
»Arris SB8200 on Suddenlink?
»Re: Per Suddenlink, Netgear CM1000 and Aarris SB8200 are approved

The CM600 and SB6183 both worked for me in New Bern. The SB6190 worked here before I returned it to Arris, but I think you should put a note next to that and the Hitron CDA3-35 or have them under a separate category saying that it has the Puma 6 DoS/Latency bug. Also, you should probably clarify the date tested as date last tested so the Hitron would be 11/2017 and the SB8200 for me would be 7/2017 unless someone has tried it since then.

Does anyone have a list of compatible modems that also have built in wifi routers also? I was just upgraded from 100 to 200mb service and really don't want to keep paying $10/month for this wifi@home BS... but don't want to spend $300 for a setup either. Suggestions?

The best thing to do is get a separate Modem and Router so you can upgrade the router as needed ( wireless standards change over time ) and update the modem as needed ( Modems change over time DOCSIS 2.0,3.0, etc. ). They should not charge for wifi if you have a "modem only" on your account.

Should put an asterisk next to the SB6190 since it is Puma 6 and maybe a link next to the Puma 6 asterisk either to the Arris SB6190 Puma 6 forum or badmodems.com

Just take this Arris TG2482A back to the local SL office in town and ask for bare modem, correct?

Now, given that, what wifi routers are everyone having good luck? I have a 200mb connection, so it needs to handle that well. I don't really have a need for more than 200, but given that I was at 6Mb on Frontier about 3 years ago, I've come a long way.

Yes, you can take the modem/router combo back and request a Modem only. Just make sure they don't charge you a modem rental fee. I would recommend a Netgear CM600 or a SB6183.

As far as a router, You will need to purchase one. Any $60 and up router should be ok.

At least in the Branson market, they charge a modem rental fee of $10/mo. Coincidentally, that's the same as the modem+gateway+wifi rental fee of $10/mo...so there's no savings by going modem-only short of buying your own.

As far as wifi performance, the limiting factor will almost certainly be your end devices, not the router. I have a UniFi AP AC HD, which is probably just about as top-of-the-line as you can get (99.9% of the way towards top-end enterprise-class stuff at a fraction of the price). If you sum all the bands and 4x4 MIMO and everything it does, it'll do about 2.5gbps...but with 2x2 MIMO chips in my iPhone and laptop, the most I can realistically get is about 300mbps. If you have a better wireless chip in your laptop (or phone) that can do 3 chains (3x3 MIMO), you'll get better performance than I do, but any router that supports 3 chains is about all you really need at this point.

That said, I do highly recommend Ubiquiti gear, even though the AP AC HD is overkill...the UniFi AP AC PRO is plenty for your needs at 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the HD. You do need a separate, dedicated wired router; Ubiquiti's own EdgeRouter series is great at a good price point, though I myself am more of a Mikrotik guy and have been very pleased with the newest hEX, which retails for $50, so you can have a top-end network set-up for about $170 total, less than many fancy AC1900 routers at Best Buy, at the cost of a slight learning curve to set it up. Or if you want an all-in-one router+wireless ap device, the MikroTik hAP ac is fantastic (I have them in two properties) for slightly more than $100. Wireless performance won't be quite as great as the Ubiquiti, but unless you have a large house, you won't have any trouble pulling at least 200mbps through its wifi.

A followup on my experience. I bought a refurb Belkin AC1600 dual band router. Took back to my local SL office the modem/wifi router I was leasing. They told me the only choices I had were to either purchase my own router (which the gal couldn't give me the correct specs... referring to it as 24 "bit" instead of 24 "channels".. yes I tried to correct her and complained about it to a supervisor) or purchase theirs for $80. I took the latter because they upgraded it to a 32 channel modem. So, they no longer give the modems out for free, you lease it for $10 a month either with or without wifi, at least in southern WV.
