War Driving...

I've read recently from a local paper that some hackers engage in what is called "War Driving". The article explained how hackers would drive around looking for wireless networks. I mention the article to my friend who has a wireless network. What steps can he take to make sure his home wireless network is secured?

This topic is covered ad nauseum in the Wireless Networking forum: »Wireless Networking

Here is a recent sample: »Securing your WLAN without WEP?

You know what...when I wanted to start my home network I originally wanted to go wireless because my buddy kept telling me how great it was. When I was doing some research on some wireless cards and routers, I found them to be too expensive at the time. Thank God for me being cheap. I ended up going the Cat5 route and after reading those "War Driving" articles, I'm glad I did.

Securing your wireless isn't that difficult.

Bestbuy, Walmart, Petsmart Security Issues
For about 2 days, there has been alot of talk about how when you purchase at a Bestbuy, all of your information is sent out in cleartext across a wireless network. That information can be captured while transfering across the network.

Yeah I know...I've read that. I haven't seen any updates on this issue. Is this still happening to those stores you mention above? So far my recent visits to Best Buy was purchasing stuff with cash. If this is still going on, I think I'll stop using my CC at those stores you mention until they address it.

I think War Driving articles induce fear if you don't know what's involved. Its not hard to make a wireless network inaccessible to all but the most determined intruder. Which is pretty much the same thing you can say about any PC that has a firewall. Your habits and security awareness/diligence are the key factors in thwarting intrusions.

That said, CAT5 is certainly the speed champ, but often it is the inconvenience champ, too.
