pa555Seconds Last join:2001-05-11 Monrovia, CA | reply to LBadvance Well you guy may no better than I but I dont see how his registry is all messy. Just because of this one program, McAfee virus software. Its McAfee that puts all the keys in there like that but dont remove them when you run the uninstall. So I dont know about her computer but mine is full & I for one dont want to put all my other programs back on and tweak my DSL all over again just because I didn't want McAfee......
Who knows maybe he wants to be back over there next week..
PS.... jopfef McAfee says to do all the uninstalls and install in safe mode or thats what I read anyway...... |

| reply to thegrinch8 Well, dagnabit, Grinch!!! Wish I had known that earlier!!!
I'm just in learning mode on Radmin, but REALLY like it so far! Today was the first time I tried it outside of my LAN, and it went very well. The only thing I had to do was slow down a bit, since you have to wait for the response via the delay. Once I got used to that, it was as easy as pie!
I'll keep that in mind once I'm connected up in the morning again. -- "...If the beasts were gone, we would die from a great loneliness of spirit." - Chief Seattle |

| reply to pa555 Paul, if she by some freak chance has the CD, and I can re-install McAfee, I'll definitely do it in Safe Mode.
THANK YOU for that info!!! -- "...If the beasts were gone, we would die from a great loneliness of spirit." - Chief Seattle |

 | reply to jopfef yo jopfef, how did it go? I hope you got everything working. Yes Remote Administrator is an excellent program. I have done many installs through it and was able to reboot and then log in again. I love that program.
hope you got rid of mcafee, they really let me down. I was with them and must have spent a lot. They just are not keeping up with customer service and program ability. I mean when I found several people posting at PC magazine web site that the program from mcafee that they paid for would not run, I knew it may be time to move on. -- thegrinch "the price of mortality is death." |

| Hi, Grinch!!!
I re-installed McAfee last night, and then uninstalled it this morning. I'm working around her schedule, so I'm doing what I can when I can. I think things are going okay. Bless Radmin for being such a super program!!!
Tomorrow I plan to go through the registry and make sure that all the McAfee stuff is out of there. Will back up the registry before and after "surgery" to be on the safe side!
After that, I'll get Norton on there, get all the updates done, and then we're home free! She's a writer, and simply can't risk having a virus/worm get into anything that needs to go out. She's VERY angry that McAfee hasn't provided the antivirus security that she thought she would have with them. Oi vey... She's also on a cable modem, so I installed Trojan Hunter tonight and scanned her system, and will drop ZoneAlarm on there tomorrow. She's getting a crash course in security, that's for sure!
Thanks for checking in!!! I'll keep you posted, and let you know when everything is up and running again.
And to everyone who had input in this thread, I give a GREAT BIG THANK YOU!!!!!!!! Your help has been awesome, and I REALLY appreciate it!!!!! -- "...If the beasts were gone, we would die from a great loneliness of spirit." - Chief Seattle |

PA, I've been using Radmin to do this work on the computer in New York. It's got a fully functional 30-day trial, and is $35 to keep. Needless to say, I own it! It comes in extremely handy when I have to work on a system that isn't here, and I seem to be doing more and more of that these days. Yes, it has to be on both computers, but I just have the other person download and install the 30-day trial, so that I can do my work. If they choose to purchase the program, that's up to them. Most of the time, I can resolve most problems in a day or two, depending on access. So the 30-day trial works very well for my client needs.
I'm familiar with PCAnywhere; the sys guy I used to work with used it to access from home whenever I had problems at night. I liked the idea of remote access, but just wasn't willing to shell out the kind of money it was going to take to buy it. Radmin more than meets my needs, and the price is excellent! I tried VNC, but didn't have any luck getting it set up to run outside of my LAN. Radmin is beautifully easy to use, so I'm sticking with it.

Yes, she had the original CD -- thankfully! -- so I installed it and then uninstalled it the next morning. I have to work around her schedule and mine, so it's sort of a hit and miss deal when I can get access to the system.
I have to totally agree with you about learning things here at DSLR! I've learned more here than I've probably learned in many years!
Thanks for all your help!!! -- "...If the beasts were gone, we would die from a great loneliness of spirit." - Chief Seattle |

1. Did she find an actual McAfee CD or was it included in another CD as a package like a restoration CD from the manufature of the PC.
jopfef and Gunth, In regard to "SonicWALL has a McAfee cleaner on their FTP site"
I was reading more about that at these two sites and was wondering if you need both... myciocleanup.exe nukemck.exe.
...to do the job. And if Gunth has any more Pointer just how to use them?
Thanks, John

 | I should have been a bit more clear with the SonicWALL link - I wass really late for an appointment. If you are just trying to get rid of McAfee completely, the program you need is mcafeecleaner.zip. NukeMCK.exe is within that, and when you run it the program will remove all McAfee references in the registry. It does not remove the files, but you can manually delete them if you like. Whether you do or don't, McAfee is uninstalled.
WARNING - clicking 'Ok' after running NukeMCK.exe will reboot your PC.
You can ignore the other files in the FTP folder.
I would have linked right to the file but I, personally, hate when downloads are directly linked.
Good luck! |

| reply to Time Out$ Okay, John! Here is my attempt to answer questions!
1.) Yes, she had the actual CD. It was McAfee version 4.01, and I installed it in Safe Mode, then uninstalled it in Safe Mode the next morning. Doing this in Safe Mode was per PA's suggestion.
2.) Yes, if you're going to remove McAfee from a system, you need to run both those little apps before you try to install any other software. The "nukemck.exe" file pretty much tells you what it does, but the "myciocleanup.exe" file finds and removes registry entries for some weird app that McAfee puts on the system from those earlier versions. I ran both, both found stuff and removed it, and the system is now clear of McAfee. It wasn't until I ran the "myciocleanup.exe" app that the McAfee stuff stopped showing up during the boot process. When I ran the "nukemck.exe" file, it caused a reboot at the end of the process. When I ran the "myciocleanup.exe" file, it just went to a normal EOJ. I rebooted anyway, and that's when I found out that the McAfee was gone from the boot process.
3.) I ran a full online system scan on that system, via Panda Software's website. When I tried to install Norton, it crashed and burned. So I hopped out to their tech support and tried to run their online scan, and found out that it won't run if the system is infected! HELLOOOO! What the hell do they have the scan for??? Anyway, I then went to Panda's website; downloaded and ran PQREMOVE.COM. It's their virus removal tool, and it's the BEST removal tool I've ever used, bar none. It found Klez immediately, kicked itself into a DOS scan of the system, and cleaned all the Klez crap out of the system. Then, I ran the full online system scan -- VERY time consuming!!! -- but I wasn't about to take any more chances. The scan ran for well over an hour, and came up clean.
4.) When I have access again this evening, I'll install Norton. I've already downloaded and installed Lavasoft's Ad-Aware; cleaned off an incredible amount of spyware, and have it set to update and run automatically. I also have Trojan Hunter installed, and her system was clean. I'm also going to secure her NetBIOS this evening. Once Norton is on, then I'll drop ZoneAlarm on, and she'll be as safe and secure as I can get her.
So, hope this answers everything! It's probably more information than you wanted, but hey! you asked, you got! -- "...If the beasts were gone, we would die from a great loneliness of spirit." - Chief Seattle |

Time Out$Premium join:2002-04-28 North Myrtle Beach, SC | You found the KLEZ Fantastic Jo! I have been preaching that pqremove in here for ages and we all thank you for the step by step you have given on this one so far.
Yes, I know about the on-line scan thing also.
Then want to suggest one more thing...this tool from symantec is no Klutz and it has found so other pieces of Klez on two systems that the panda missed. So think about it also..
