Is it Possible to Buy Modem for Rogers?

I'm not too sure about this but is it possible for Rogers customers to buy their own modems and get a decrease in their monthly bill?

why would you want to anyway...If it goes out from a storm then you'd be out $$$. Have you ever tried to replace something on warranty??? Last time I did I was to send it in at my expense and wait till I got a new item....Definately not worth the wait

What do you mean? What can happen to the modem during a storm?

it gets VERY scared and doesn't want to work, it likes to hide under the covers.

i think he was referring to lightning strikes.

If you are in an area where DOCSIS is enabled, then you can go out and buy any DOCSIS compliant modem and it will work....

I unfortunately am not in such an area.....

The question is, of course, why at this point would you bother buying one?

Reasons for my not buying.

Am not charged rental.

Have had to have Rogers replace 2 modems in the last 18 months.

Rogers in my area will being replacing my Motorola modem with a DOCSIS modem.

I've had my modem for about 3 years and it's still working fine. If I get a decrease in my bill for having my own it will be worth it.

Brimicombe, my bills never stated what I was paying for modem rental but it is included in the price.

This is how my bill looks like:

Hi-Speed Internet Service.............44.95
Hi-Speed Cable Modem Rental............0.00

You "believe" that you are paying for a modem, Rogers is telling you that there "no charge" at the moment. That's why that line is there.

I mean with the new cap we will get half the "Hi-Speed" for the same price.

Next step we'll be renting our modems for $10.00 or so a month.

I'm in an old Shaw area, a technician was in yesterday and he told me that the Motorola modems in use in our area are all going to be replaced with DOCSIS modems.

Thats exactly what I'm concerned about too, they originally said that they're increasing the price by $5 to cover modem rentals, but they dont list the $5 modem rental in the bill! I am sure they will do the same trick in the future. Whats funny is that it states that "regular modem rental" is $15! Sneaky bastards.

Umm, rogers may be implementing DOCSIS eventually, I know the headends are getting upgradeded, but no modems have showed up in the test depots yet for testing, and they aren't being told to get ready for it yet. So I am not sure how 'soon' it will be before we have DOCSIS with Rogers in Toronto.

Satellite is a total disaster anywhere you live, from what I've heard.

i use satellite for TV, nothing can touch it...the internet on it is expensive though, and not as fast as DSL or cable.
