Return them

Everyone just needs to return them, stating they dont play in an audio player, because a pc is an audio player. MASS returns mean MASS loss.

Do you think the demographic buying Celine Dion Cd's has any clue about any of this.. lets be honest here.. if you are buying a Celine Dion CD you aren't the sharpest knife in the drawer to begin with..

Maybe, but Celine Dion is just the beginning. The next one may be your favorite artist.
I sure won't be buying any more Sony products, and I make sure to tell everyone I know to do the same...

This is even better than boycott. When you boycott, they simply don't get your money. Here, not only do they not get your money, they also incur losses. To spice things up, try exchanging these copy-protected CDs at least once or twice before returning them and asking for your money back. This will hopefully double or triple their losses.

Amen! I have already enlisted the support of three of my friends / coworkers. This shite is getting out of hand with corporations serving as the bully in a consumerist society. We (consumers) may not be the best thing in the world, but by ghod, WE are the ones with the money to spend, and it's about time that these damned corporations started to pay attention and do business properly / ethically!

OK everyone: start a chain letter, spam all your friends!

Go out and buy the Celine Dion CD from as many stores as you can. Exchange them all a couple of times before you finally return them. If every DSLR user did this Sony would be on its knees in about 3 days.

Have you tried to return an opened CD for a refund? The clerk may very well point you in the direction of their "Buy your used CDs" department. A lot of places don't accept returns on opened CDs or software. This is an area where I bet the laws from state-to-state (or even county-to-county) may play a role in your success.

I like the exchanging part (they are, after all, intentionally defective merchandise), now if we had an iron-clad way of getting the money back.

I checked at Tower Records...not only is there NO WAY on the outside of the Celine Dion CD that you can tell it is not a regular CD - but the return policy is that opened or defective merchandise can be returned for same item only.

How many of them would I have to return before they got sick of me, you think? "Sorry, no, this one won't work either!" "All fifteen of these don't work?" "Afraid not.... do you have any more I can try or can I have a store credit?"

To which they'll say: "we refuse the right to serve anyone...". Sad but true. There is no accountability anymore for crap products. Just look at some of the licenses / contracts / labels on some of your products or receipts -- "non-returnable, non-refundable, blah blah blah".
However, if you went in there often enough, and they refused to accept faulty merchandise, then you could always call out the manager, explain your position, and inform him / her that you will promptly be sending a letter to: congresspeople, legislative people, BBB, Ralph Nader, States AG, etc. A little bit of work for you, and hopefully, fear for the manager. Or, you could have one of your friends call up as an Attorney, and threaten to sue.

Whatever, as long as we all keep getting screwed by the megaliths, we will keep getting screwed by the megaliths.

Record stores have more competition though. If I try to pull a return/refund on the Celine Dion CD at Tower Records, and if 10 other people do, and we all tell them we'll start shopping at HMV down the street, they may wise up and start labelling these copy protected CDs so that we will keep shopping there. That is what we really want to push for - changing the store policies. They WILL change it if enough customers want it and it's in their best interests to do so.

you know, I'm trying to figure out: if it's not labeled as a cd, which apparently it isn't, what the hell is it?

Q: does it contain music (let's not get into the debate about the "quality" of music! )
A: Yes

Q: does it contain video?
A: I don't know

Q: does it contain some fancy kind of interactive experience? Is it a frickin' video game?
A: not to my knowledge, unless celine just acquired Loki games.

Then what the hell is the thing? It seems that the only affirmative up there is Audio, therefore (and maybe I'm just naive), it's either an eight track tape, a cassette tape, a record, a dvd, or a cd. OR is this some new "hyper-media" initiative created by the marketing wizards @ $ony?

Peace

I think the reason its not labeled a cd is a legal question.I remeber a few months ago sony was going to get sued ny phillips I think.Phillips owns the copy right to cds. They told sony that if it doesnt work like a cd it cant be labeled a cd.They also cd it couldnt be marketed the same as a cd.IE has to be seperate from reg cd isles.Anybody can chime in and correct me.Im sorry but Im going by memory.I dont know if phillips won the case or not.Im not even sure if it was a court case,They might have just sent them a letter to cut the stuff out since they hold the patent.
