My area is finally docsis. I'm getting rogers!

well after spending almost 3 months with sympatico and never beeing satisfied with my service i'm going back to rogers... i called before after i canceled it and they said i would be getting a motorola modem. now they said its a docsis modem, altho they didnt say if its a ericsson or rca...
i cant wait to get rogers again... i'm probably gonna ping 6m to my 1st hop... since i use my internet for gaming thats sweet for me... unlike the 50ms+ pings to the 1st hop i get with sympatico. anyway i hope the lady i talked to wasnt just telling me its a docsis modem so i sign up.
the bad thing is that its gonna take like 10 days for them to install it. i guess they got a lot of installations to do... damn bundles

if you are going to rogers, then i guess we will "read" from you later...that is, when your service is "online" and not down.

well i had it before
it was pretty much never down
except for when it was really windy outside and it caused some troubles wit my cable... i had to go move it around a bit and i never had a prob since then... on the motorola modems the service is pretty bad but on the docsis modem its gonna be good. i hate sympatico's 800/100 speeds and 50ms or more to my 1st hop... its a pain when it comes to gaming. also it went out like 4 times while i was downloading or playing.

probably will, but i get 15 ms pings to first hop and CONSISTENT speeds, and a network that doesn't go down all the time (i know..some area's are better than others).

i wish you luck

if i got 15ms pings to my 1st hop and consistent 900+/120+kbps speeds i would probably stay with sympatico or get another dsl isp... but since i dont i wont
oh and in terms of downtime sympatico was overall worse then rogers

Ummm, quick question guys? why are you so excited about DOCSIS? All it is a standard, sure a better standard then the SCDMA that is currently in place but it doesn't necessarily mean good service. There will still be shitty modems and shitty CMTS's and crowded nodes. It will just be a DOCSIS compliant crowded node. So what? DOCSIS is a good thing for the cable internet industry but the basics still apply.

How Can You Tell If An Area Is Docsis Compliant?

From the results i've seen, docsis does make a difference. Whenever my cousin comes home from university he orders rogers for the summer until he goes back. Usually he gets the sharkfin modem and his speeds would be pretty good (1500/300). This time when he came back he got an Ericsson modem and hes getting 2500/400 speeds consistently and when we play games online he pings below 40ms. I've also seen before and after results for people who recently got docsis modems and their speeds have increased as well.

If my area is DOCSIS, can I ask for a new DOCSIS modem?

Don't ask, demand. If you're in an area that is getting poor performance and has been upgraded to docsis, they won't go door to door handing out new modems to people. The only way you can get it is if your modem is defective or if you're a new member. So your best bet is to explain to them that you've stuck with rogers even throughout the worst of times and as a loyal member you deserve a new modem. If that doesn't work, fry your modem.

yea i know. but since most areas are just getting docsis ctms' the're very good. if rogers doesnt do a good job maintaining them then obviously the're gonna become garbage again... but its gonna take a while for that to happen... and i can always switch to igs.net or golden.net dsl... plus i'm going to be paying like $25 for the 1st 4 months... since i'm not in a good financial situation right now its a win win situation for me. plus since i game alot the ping times the docsis modems achieve is very sweet. i mean u'd need a sdsl line or t1 to get those pings... anyway i'll get rogers and see how it goes. if i'm not satisfied there's lots of dsl isp's just a fonecall away. plus in 1 year or 2 there's gonna be affordable wireless service.

good news for me
i got my installation moved up a couple of days sooner (tuesday) and my friend just got his motorola modem switched to a docsis... he called rogers... tech came over and did some tests and he convinced the tech to give him a docsis modem. hes getting 2400/380 speeds and 8ms pings to the 1st hop... hes on the same phub as me (MTAG) so i guess its good news for me...
