Thats very thorough. Cant think of any you left out. One thing is wrong though, songspy does have spyware but its VERY easy to remove or you can get songspy lite at clean clients to remove it for you. [text was edited by author 2002-05-31 07:22:40] |

Check out the "Peer-to-Peer Comparison Chart" link at the top of this forum. I haven't had a chance to update it in quite a while, so it's very outdated, but if you want to take over maintaining it, I can send you the spreadsheet I used. |
|

I'd be honored to update it, send it to paranoidxe@yahoo.com Thanks |

Thanks for picking this up. It's on its way. There have been a lot of changes since the last update six months ago -- Morpheus is no longer on FastTrack, WinMX finally has a new version, and some of those clients are no longer around. The 'net is a ever-changing place. |

Here's a couple more for the listI just found out about this one last night - I don't know much about it: Applejuice » www.artour-design.de/aj/ ··· ownl.phpAnd a brand new one, still in it's infancy stage VarVar » kademlia.scs.cs.nyu.edu/ ··· var.html |

Re: P2P Programs ListIf you added kazaa lite..then you should add all the lite versions. You corrected that songspy does have spyware, but didnt add that there is a lite version. The same for some of the others. Most of these programs that have spyware have been modified to lite versions. Most are in lite versions and spyless. You can get them at clean clients as well as many other sites. heres link for clean clients » www.cleanclients.tk/[text was edited by author 2002-05-31 09:08:29] |

Yes indeed - I think including the spyware free versions would be a very important addition |

How about just adding a notation that says "Lite version available" or something like that. That would keep the list shorter. In the P2P comparison table format, the "Spyware?" column could have values of Y, N, or L (for Lite). |

... nice work, thanks for taking the time ...
... do you suppose it will help eliminate all the duplicate 'IS there any...', or 'Where can I ...' threads ? ... boy, I hope so ...
... one note - I have WinMX 3.1, but I still use 2.6 most often ... I'd suggest you list them both, if you think it's appropriate ...
... have a good one ...

Yeah!
HotLine....
I still have it installed but haven't used it in about 1yr. It was a pain to hop around web pages to click and find passwords as the "file giver" got some money...

Heh, I was one of those 'givers' for a while a few years ago. Then the .comz stopped paying. Jeez that was fun & easy $$ for a while. You can still find a lot of 'free' spots that don't make you click on banners etc. Make a couple friends on unadvertized servers & it really proves its worth... |

Sorry, haven't kept up on it. Last thing I remember was the demise of the 'Star Wars Depot.' That place ruled, 60 concurrent connections each with a ~50K pipe. I think the guy was running it off his work LAN, some ISP, in a corner. Then someone went and turned him in b/c he wouldn't give em an account. |

I know someone already pointed this out, but I just last night downloaded SongSpy, it is very full of spyware. I played around with it a little and it seems to be one of the fastest on downloads, but it lacking on some features. I ran adaware after downloading and it found 299 instances of spyware + my firewall asked me for access to something besides songspy. My computer was clean before I downloaded this program. Just thought I point that out.
You can't have everything where would you put it? |

I personally think the Fast Track P2P clients are the best. |

Songspy DOES contain the msbb.exe spyware (I believe it generates pop-ups in IE?). However, its very easy to remove with Ad-aware.

... Hey wjb, thanks for the heads-up on Furthur ... I downloaded it, got no spyware, and saw some interesting bands listed ... have to check it out more when I have some time ...
... it's DEFINITELY a broadband site, tho ... 140 mb mp3 files would take FOREVER with a dial-up ... I figure that's prolly an 80 minute show, I'd guess ...
... anyway, good find - here's a thumb ...

What's a better choice Grokster (Spyware-Free) or Kazaalite (Spyware-Free) ? |

... FURTHUR on ...... well, I ran Furthur late last night, and it's pretty interesting ... I got 3 concerts, from 1:05 to 1:44 in length ... mp3 @256k ... one had all the song titles and times listed, 2 did not - but you can edit the titles after you have them, if you know the songs ... ... they came through as one file, but the tracks are ID'd and timed ... convenient ... and the sound on the two I've sampled is excellent ... nice new option to have ... ... it's definitely an overnight kinda thing, tho, I M H O - even with my cable connection the files took over 2 hours to d/l ... but there's some good choices there, and worth a look ... ... wasn't sure of the other file choice, tho ... SHN file extension ... they have a plugin for winamp to play that file, but I dunno if it's a faster D/l or not, and I read in their boards that some people had a hard time converting these for burning ... oh yeah, they have forums and chat as well, BTW ... ... here's the link, if you wanna check 'em out ... » www.furthurnet.com... and credit to wjb for the find ... |
