WOW

It still amazes me the state of DSL in this country. A year ago, things were very positive with the deployment of DSL, now it's extremely shakey. Not just a couple of big players folded, a lot of them did.

It seems, like all major technologies, that only the "bigboys" will be able to play, and profit.

its unfair, the telcos charge each a massive amount for each line... if they want dsl to live, they'd cut back on the profits.

Its like Microsoft charging each software company $30 for each copy they sell just so its able to run on windows... if they did that, then MS would be the only game in town. MS could offer their software cheaper than anyone else, and kill the whole market... ofc the government would stop them. But they don't seem to be stopping the telcos.

I would have to say...yes! Throughout my DSL plight, they have always delivered.

My life with Internet Express was great, and now with Speakeasy, just that much better with the "extras" they (SE) add.

The business plans are all coming home to roost. While some honest providers are going under, it seems most of those going under are those who tried to match ILEC pricing with the delusion that it could go on forever.

And through this all, with the closing of ISP's left and right, and especially in Bazillion's case ("sorry, we don't give a hoot about you any more, we're gone -- fend for yourselves"), it's leaving a very souring taste in the mouths of those who have had or who were looking at DSL service. It's a wonderful technology, but its reputation is being sullied by the few who were just out to make a buck.

Welcome to the next two years of hell.

Re: WOW

I believe it's the government that sets the rates at which a telco can sell a "line". Telcos are regulated by tariff laws. When the gov. regulates how much MS sells their product for THEN you can make a comparison.

As far as "big" dsl companies going under it's both shocking and disheartening. Just goes along with the saying "It takes money to make money". Hmm, although SBC's Prodigy is taking on water at this very moment. Go figure...
